so whats the best shopping cart software?

Free carts suck unless you like playing with programming. Go with a paid cart.

BigCommerce is hosted solution. Decent platform.
1shoppingcart is pretty good and integrated with a lot of gateways. I'd start by seeing what works with my gateway and work back from there.
Magento has paid versions.

What needs to be to speed up Magento? I am having a Magneto site developed right now. It will be hosted using Cloud hosting.

If you value your time and your sanity avoid hosting your own cart. Take it from some1 who has been there and done that for years. I'd never do it again. What you gain in cost you will lose in your own hours. I prefer 3dcart but there are a number of them out there. Avoid Volusion - up time issues. Avoid Yahoo. Very basic and very slow. Make sure whatever you get has an API.

Look's like I'm late to the party, but at least I have the winning cart ;D

Seriously though, check out Pinnacle cart - PHP Shopping Cart Software | eCommerce Website Solution | Storefront Design | Hosted Shopping Cart | Online Store Builder

And, for all you cocksuckers out there that use the same cart over and over, claiming its best, take a look at this feature list, and tell me your cart can do all of it ;)

Complete Feature List

The only downside is the price - if that ain't a problem it wins 100%.

I personally use a heavily modified front end but use OSCommerce to process the orders. I've found that all the mods and community of developers it has was one of the big motivating factors behind using it. The front end blows in terms of SEO though. You really you should do all that from scratch anyway in my opinion. Something custom that is tailored around the products you are selling is always best.

I've cashed most of my checks over Jamula's Virtuemart. We're launching a few new products, what would you guys recommend for digital transactions?

Is turning categories OFF and redirecting the www enough to limit the duplicate URL's, or should you use the canonical tags, as well?

Sent you a PM. That should cover the bulk of it. It's honestly not something I'm overly concerned about anyways:

Official Google Webmaster Central Blog: Demystifying the "duplicate content penalty"

Im not worried from a penalty standpoint, I jnust want to be able to dictate which page I want to be considered the main page of content. If I have 5 URLs or a product, I dont want that to cause indexing issues. My site will have 8,000 products, 3000 of them will have the same content, but with different attributes.

Now that I think about it, the automatic canonical feature in MAgento's admin just makes the /product the main page. If I have 3000 products with the same content, that feature will do me no good. I will have to find a better way. Since I am not really technical, I might end up rewriting the content for all those pages.

I've only developed 2 sites with a shopping cart.. one with OS Commerce, and the second with Magento. Hopefully you'll learn from my mistakes: Don't even waste your time with OS Commerce.
