On the firing line
So, I was reading some blogs the other day: Blue Hat SEO-Advanced SEO Tactics » How to make a $100 per day and one that I can not divulge (sorry, owner doesn't want it publicized) and figured I'd try some of the techniques out. Okay, I haven't tested Eli's, but I plan to. I tried the other person's idea and it didn't work out the way I had hoped, or the way it was described. No big deal, because, as a result it made me think (a rarity, so I was pretty stoked). In the end, I came up with an idea that is kind of a hybrid of the two posts, yet different.

Download Inno Setup 5.1.12 - Inno Setup is a tool that helps you to create windows installers. - Softpedia

How it works

1.Same as Eli's post, create a screensaver with something that will attract people. It could be cars, celebrities, whatever. I used ScreenSaver Builder and created adult screensavers basically because I have access to an assload of porn from my adult sponsors. So, it was easier that trying to find "clean" pics.

When you create your screensaver file, save it as a .scr, not the .exe.

2. Go to Conduit.com - Free community toolbar Builder in a Few Easy Steps and create a custom toolbar. Use your existing site or an affiliate site as the "Site". For mine, I used an adult affiliate link. So, if people click on it, they go to the main tour page for that adult site. Next, I added a couple buttons with dropdowns and a bunch of links. Each link is an affiliate link for the same adult program. One button is "Models" and I have a link to each model's page on the site, the other is "Galleries" with affiliate links to free galleries of naked chicks.

Once you have your toolbar created, download the .exe file for it. If you normally use Firefox, you'll have to open IE to get the .exe file, otherwise it will keep trying it install the Firefox extension.

3. Now that you have your toolbar and screensaver, open Inno and we're going to create the .exe file for distribution. Luckily, it's a very simple process, just follow the wizard and you're nearly done. Couple things to note: you can either designate a folder for the installer to save your files to, or you can choose "No folder needed". If you're doing screensavers, choose "No folder needed", this will unpack your files to the Windows folder.

Once you've completed the Wizard and created your .exe it will ask if you want to compile it. Say "No". You need to add another line to the script first.

Add:
Code:
[Run]
Filename: "{win}\Your-Toolbar.exe";
[UninstallDelete]
Type: files; Name: "{win}\Your-Toolbar.exe";
Those two lines, tell the compiler that after it unpacks the files, it needs to run your toolbar file to install it, and after running, it should delete the toolbar's .exe file.

So, your Inno script should look something like this:
Code:
; Script generated by the Inno Setup Script Wizard.
; SEE THE DOCUMENTATION FOR DETAILS ON CREATING INNO SETUP SCRIPT FILES!

[Setup]
AppName=Screensaver Name
AppVerName=Whatever
AppPublisherURL=http://www.your-site.com
AppSupportURL=http://www.your-site.com
AppUpdatesURL=http://www.your-site.com
CreateAppDir=no
OutputBaseFilename=setup
Compression=lzma
SolidCompression=yes

[Languages]
Name: "english"; MessagesFile: "compiler:Default.isl"

[Files]
Source: "C:\Documents and Settings\Michael\Desktop\screensavers\Your-Toolbar.exe"; [COLOR=Yellow]DestDir: "{win}"[/COLOR]; Flags: ignoreversion
Source: "C:\Documents and Settings\Michael\Desktop\screensavers\Your-Screensaver.scr"; DestDir: "{win}"; Flags: ignoreversion
; NOTE: Don't use "Flags: ignoreversion" on any shared system files

[Run]
Filename: "[COLOR=Yellow]{win}[/COLOR]\Your-Toolbar.exe";

[UninstallDelete]
Type: files; Name: "{win}\Your-Toolbar.exe";
If you're not sure where to find the filename, it's whatever is between the quotes after DestDir and the toolbar name. (see yellow text if you're still lost.

Last, click on "Build" and "Compile", this will create the actual setup file. Rename the setup file to something descriptive, so people can find it when they search Limewire. Example: "Porn adult xxx sex Chrissy Moran screensaver.exe" Yeah, it's long, but its what Limewire looks at when people search. Also, it's what people see when the search result pop up.

4. Open Limewire. Specify your shared folder. Make sure your screensavers or whatever are in there. Now, just wait.

How much money did this cost? How much can you make?
Cost's nothing. Everything listed above is free, except possibly content.

How much can you make? Not sure. Porn screen savers don't seem real popular, so I'm going to try other types of screensavers, and other types of content. I'm still testing, so I can't give you any definite numbers.

Zoomist Screensaver Talk - Creating the screensavers? - links to free screensaver maker and Inno
undisclosed blog - using P2P as a marketing method

I think this idea has some potential given the correct niche. Apparently, porn screensavers are not it. In 3 days, I only got about 125 hits per screensaver and no downloads.

:D

Hmmm...looking at this again, I guess it's not much different than Eli's blog post. Just change YourSite.com to P2P and Zango to a custom toolbar.

For some reason, it sounded so much more original in my head...

Sorry Eli. Not trying to plagiarize you.

It would be much easier to just copy and paste next time, Mike. Don't forget to Find > Replace All. :D

i heard conduit keeps like 90% of the google revenue - you sure you want to give that up? i'd like to know the percentage myself. and props to you for staying away from zango who steals affiliate sales from us honest internet marketers

yup- i have a site in the works I'm planning on having a toolbar built for. Add my own google search, and I'll end up making much more $$$ than with just zango (who suck btw- don't even bother trying to adhere to all their rules, and they don't care much about you unless you can prove you will be pulling in a shit load of traffic) - not to mention lots of people downloading software, and then linking to my site... great for promotion to people who normally wouldn't have found your site!

What are the legalities of this? I mean the user wants to download a screensaver, not a toolbar.

Sorry, not to sound like a pussy or anything. :D But Eli's post seemed borderline unethical for me, and so does this...unless there's a way to justify it?

Still, major props for a raw moneymaking guide. *i tried many times to guess the name of a clapping smilely because i'm too lazy to open the popup but couldn't find one. consider this a clapping emote.*

By the way, in terms of the actual process - I think the reason you haven't got many hits is that who the hell looks for screen savers on Lime Wire? Even if they are searching for the girl, if they see the screensaver it's not what they want....they want videos. ;)

Your best bet would probably be to buy some cheap adspace on smallish porn sites. Not subscription based or anything....porn blogs, porntube, whatever.

Good points all. Yeah, I feel like a bonehead now. I was thinking "Ah yeah, this is cool, Eli got my brain working with his post, and I made it into something WAYYYY different." And then I reread my post and realized that I just changed a few things, but the concept is totally the same. Fuck! I am a retard sometime.
