I'm very tempted to start a video site. A couple of reasons:

1) Content easy to get
2) Traffic easy to get

The whole thing actually reminds me of adult TGPs - traffic trades, paid plugs etc.

What makes these types of site great is that they seem easy to make. You can solve the content/traffic problem in one go. Put a link to a video on your traffic partner's site. The partner will send you traffic back. That'll give you content and traffic at the same time!

Sites are easy to set up because you can just buy paid plugs to give a temporary boost to traffic. Send this traffic to link partners as previously describe. Rinse and repeat.

Does anyone have any experience in this department?

Thanks:rasta:

Forgot to mention multiple monetization options. Not only AdSense, but the typical CPM ad companies, paid plugs (unique to this type of site) and AdEngage (which seems to do especially well).

You seem to have thought this through, so maybe this is a niche for you.. but my personal thought is.. why work hard on a site in a niche (free videos) that doesn't pay well? Who cares if you can get lots of traffic if the clicks are only going to be paying a few cents each? If you are going to work hard on something, why not go with a profitable niche.

People who are looking at videos are doing just that. They aren't looking to spend money, so they aren't valuable at all. Now if you have a site with reviews on health related products, etc.. all of the sudden, the traffic is valuable.

Compare a mailing list for people signed up to receive funny videos and a list for people who want updates on a specific weight loss drug. One is a lot more valuable than the other.

target ur adsense to the title of the video and there you go, adsense clicks towards the niche the video is in (assuming it is titled correctly). health related videos per say (going by above example..)- I would bet a niche video site about mesothelioma would have a nice payout rate :D

instead of just having CPM ads, throw in some aff ads for health related products as well.

just a thought, health related niche was just an example...

I started a video blog a while ago....I'll just quote my post from Eli's thread.

I tried a video blog last week too. I branded and uploaded 20 pretty funny videos, but they've gotten a total of <500 views on YouTube. Google video has gotten a total of about 3 views. MySpace video has gotten <200 views. Not great results.

I think part of it is that my branding image doesn't show up for long enough. When I get some more time I'll have to download 20 more videos and get all 40 branded. Just try one more time. :P It takes a lot of time though.

If I get some time I want to try this. It's one of those things where I look at a site like that and think "I could do it better." hah, might take a while...trying wallpaper sites now.

Alright...

I've been thinking a little bit (as in like 5 minutes - so some of this might seem crazy) about what I want to do for this video site. I'm approaching it with the mentality that sites like videospud.com and hosthumor.com can easily be done better.

I definitely think I'm onto a gem here, and I'll post it because I know not many people will read this thread, and even less will even do it. It will require a dedicated server or even two, but the profits will hugely outweigh the costs.

The key is in the admin system, and how videos are uploaded.

Upload Option #1 - Direct URL
All this will do is take the URL of a video. It can accept YouTube, MySpace Video, Google Video, MetaCafe, Break, etc....anything that you can embed a video with. You can customize the title/description if you like, otherwise it will just grab it from the URL. (Hint: this is the lazy route.)

Upload #2 - Upload Videos
There are a bunch of programs to download videos from all the video sites listed above (if they don't support that themselves already). The idea is that you download a bunch of these videos, convert them to a supported format (.mp4 is probably best), and upload them to a folder on your server.

Then in the admin panel it lists all the videos you just uploaded. You add a title, description, and tags for each. Then just press upload. Here comes the server intensive part: you'll probably want a separate one for this...

Using the code in this post all the videos will be watermarked on the fly. This is easily done with PHP. Then, the watermarked video will be uploaded with some cURL to MySpace video, YouTube, Break.com - whatever you want. It's just some coding. :)

Obviously, this is a key marketing strategy. It's clear from Mark's "making money with a video blog" just how important this is. It's basically free traffic. Beautiful.

Then all it needs to do is embed that YouTube video on your site, just like the direct URL method but with all your shit on it! :D

SEO, ads, etc
This is all up to you. There are some pretty obvious options and some not so obvious ones. But the greatest part of all this will be the free traffic from the watermarked videos.

Hi chatmasta !

I have a video site based upon Mark's (@digeratimarketing) guide. I actually did all of that, and have problems getting traffic. Now, for a couple of days I'm studying videospud.com's and hosthumor.com's backlinks and "friends" section to try to get traffic from the same sources. Also using Arcade Banner Exchanges and the "friends" type of promotion (top referrers etc.) mentioned earlier.

However, the problem remains in getting traffic. I'm just not getting it in spite of what I do. (Maybe my aproach is wrong because I try to copy other successful models right not, but I don't have too many ideas atm on how to get this site to work).

Anyone here that has this type of site willing to give some tips to a newbie ? :)

Yeah I found it a difficult method of getting traffic too. But when you're doing it with hundreds of videos, and also including your link in the description of each, the effect is magnified a bit. Not only that, but at least one of your videos is sure to be a hit. Plus it shouldn't be your only method of gaining traffic - SEO, AdBrite ads, etc are very important too.

Don't forget you can let users upload videos too. Which brings me to an idea.....obviously the optimal way to do things would ONLY require the admin/user to enter the URL of the video, then just set and forget. Does anyone know of a .flv to .mp4 command line converter for *nix? ffmpeg may be able to do it, but I don't have any experience with it. If anyone cares to comment, please do. Then we could just do a normal youtube scrape to get the .flv, convert it to .mp4, then go through all those steps.

chat, this is a really good idea. I'm pretty sure ffmpeg will convert .flv to .mp4. Are you watermarking your videos? I've noticed that I get an initial surge of traffic right when I post a video with my watermark. I think we would have a winner if we could:
1) scrape youtube videos/tags
2) monetize them via adbrite etc.
3) post them back on our site
4) reupload to youtube with new site watermark

I feel like the more videos you can get uploaded the better. Having a huge network of branded videos will bring in the residual traffic.

Well I have my onpage SEO pretty well sorted out, and I have even got some traffic from G (very little traffic, but still). About AdBrite .. you suggest I should buy ads ? If yes, how much should be payed and how should I evaluate the ROI ? (and what that would be actually..). I'm not clear on what should I expect from the paid promotion.

About user uploading videos...this is tricky, since you would have to do a lot of checking. From what I've seen at other sites that allow this, there are quite a lot of people (webmasters especially) that upload porn to promote their sites/aff offers. For now, I stick to downloading videos, watermarking and re-uploading to youtube. (I don't have a lot of hosting space).

Converter from * to * (pretty much any format from what I know): ffmpeg. It's wonderfull, I use if for converting to .avi from .flv and watermarking (using overlay text on video). You'll absolutelly love this piece of software :) . (Free and illegal in the US because of software patent, but I don't live in the US fortunately :P ).

So you say you don't have any experience with it.. Well here's some instructions from one of Eli's (bluehatseo owner) readers: Professional Middleman: Watermarking a video with ffmpeg

I suggest you make a quick sh script to ease the pain of tiping all that shit everytime. I use something like this:

Code:
#!/bin/sh
echo "Transforme: $1.flv in $1.avi :"

ffmpeg -i $1.flv -y -vhook "/home/george/ffmpeg/vhook/drawtext.so -f /usr/share/fonts/truetype/msttcorefonts/Times_New_Roman.ttf -t copyright -T copyrightNotice.txt -x 5 -y 0 -s 10 -c #d8d8d8 -C #000000 -o" $1.copyrightNotice.avi
#-t copyright -T copyrightNotice.txt

ffmpeg -i $1.copyrightNotice.avi -y -vhook "/home/george/ffmpeg/vhook/drawtext.so -f /usr/share/fonts/truetype/ttf-dejavu/DejaVuSerif-Bold.ttf -t www.domain.com -T seeMore.txt -x 5 -y 10 -s 14 -c #ffffff -C #719dc3 -o" $1.avi

rm $1.copyrightNotice.avi

echo "Done."
Also you need to create 2 txt files in the same folder as the sh script, with the name : copyrightNotice.txt and seeMore.txt that should contain the 2 pieces of text to be overlayed (see explanation below) .

This script basicly takes a file's name as input, converts the filename.flv into an .avi file (filename.copyrightNotice.avi) and adds a copyright notice (actually, a disclaimer) on top of the video (in a small font).
The second call of ffmpeg takes filename.copyrightNotice.avi and adds my url (in a big font) at the top of the video.

It then automaticly removes the filename.copyrightNotice.avi as it's unnecessary. The whole thing could be made simpler, but I'm just lazy.

Btw, you can set the color for the text in hex code (just like css).

To use this script, save the code into a file like: zxc.sh
Then,in a command line, call it like this:
Code:
./zxc.sh filename
This will automaticly take the filename.flv from the current folder and put it trough the process mentioned above.

For more info on the overlay text thing, I suggest checking: Video Hook Documentation and FFMPEG: vhook/drawtext.c Source File . ffmpeg also has a module for video overlay, but never used it :).

Btw, I use Linux (Ubuntu Feisty) , what kind of *NIX do you use?
PS: for anyone else interested, ffmpeg is available on *NIX and Windows.

This is a cool idea if you can automate everything, and it sounds like you can automate virtually all of it.

does anyone have the php code to grab the FLV from a youtube URL?
I know there's services out there, but I want to use it internally for a different purpose.

Hey wrstroud, the AdBrite solution seems very nice, thx for the link ! +rep The adbrite page you linked to also offers some links to free software for converting, and a solution to host your videos (with blip.tv) that seems very nice. Have you used this / have any experience with their player ?

@stanley:
Don't know how to do it, but some guy wrote a little python app for kde, and explained how he gets the video here:
*Get YouTube Video (improved) KDE-Apps.org
Since he gives the regex expressions and everything, guess the code shouldn't be hard to convert to php ;) . Have fun .
EDIT: Also found these in php:
http://www.snatchr.co.uk/scripts/source.php?youtubeflv.php
(.*?)
Found these because of: Digg - YouTube Video Ripper .

George, great post - thanks. If I just change the .avi to .mp4 will that work?

Wrstoud, AdBrite requires you to host your own videos. But they accept .flv - that means that you can just link them to the .flv on YouTube. Still, they might get really pissed if you put ads on videos that aren't yours - anyone have experience with that?

@Chatmasta:just change the extensions to what format you desire, and ffmpeg will know what to do :) .

Oh, well that would make it even easier...just download the .flv file from youtube, brand the video with your watermark, then upload the branded .flv to adbrite--no converting would be necessary
