i work 40 hrs at a 9-5er and i find it hard to make myself do work on evenings and weekends

I created some web sites before i started working and all i do is maintain them now. i haven't done much as far as making them grow more , etc.

anyone have any tips to change this?

Quit your job. It's getting in the way ;)

Seriously, I never had that problem when working a 9 - 5. My problem was not working on my sites when I was at work. But when I got home, you had to pry me away from the computer. My wife hated it.

Now that I work from home on my stuff all the time, I get to spend even more time on my sites, and my wife still hates it j/k.

If you think of your sites and affiliate marketing as work, it's going to be really tough. I think most of us do this because we love working for ourselves and actually enjoy the challenge.

Set your self a realistic goal for yourself. eg: Make $100 a month, then write a small plan of attack on how you will hit your goal, a date of when your goal is to be completed by and a timeline of milestones for your project. I find, like most people that once you actually write your goals down, I am way more focused and put in the hours to see my goal through.

Good Luck, if you stick at it, you will make it.

You want motivation to grow your sites? Quit your job, you'll work like a mofo.

It sounds like your satisfied working at your job and view your sites as a hobby, if you weren't satisfied you'd have the motivation to make enough money to quit.

Find pictures of things you want; your dream house, a hummer (no not that, the truck), a vacation to Hawaii, a seven-fugure check (photoshop it so it's made payable to you). Plaster them everywhere; on the walls, in the bathroom, on the fridge, your desktop wallpaper, screensaver, etc.

There are plenty of places to learn about goal setting/achieving, google 'em.

My biggest motivator was/is success, when I try something and it works, I try harder to make work even better and it motivates me to keep trying other things.

But you may also have to consider that this business isn't for you. If you don't enjoy what you're doing, it'll seem like a job, a job where you can screw off when you want and you'll get nothing done.

Negotiate with your manager to work from home. If you think it could be a problem, take sick leave for a few days...BUT do your work from home and do it BETTER. Then go back and show them.

Next say you have some things to sort out (make up anything important) so logistically can't get to work for a few days but would continue the work at home. Then show them even BETTER results when you come back.

By this time, they are getting the idea you work well, increased productivity and produce good work from home. Then propose to them because of some reason (again...a long term thing...) you need to work from home. Since they know you do a better job at home, they should be ok with it.

Once you can work from home, just do a few hours of work for your job and spend the rest of your time on your sites. Even better is that if your job is technical, outsource it to india (their salary is tiny compared to yours) and then dedicate all your time on your sites. So effectively you take less income from your job (new salary = salary - indian guy you employ). BUT it will free up your time for your sites!

SeoReborn- Either you wrote or just read 4 Hour Work Week...Great Book :)

As far as the 9-5 thing, I was just able to goto part time due to online income. I could have quit altogether, however I made some dumb decisions (bought a car). I found it easiest to determine the needed income by day, as that's how it breaks down best for me. If you make $XXX a month, divide that into a daily income.

First things first, cut out shit you really don't need. If you have mutiple cars, phones, whatever, -just get rid of excess bills you can really live without.

I actually find it incredibly hard to stay motivated working without a 9-5 job. You don't have any bosses sitting there threatening to fire you if you don't show up to work. It takes a lot of self discipline.

baby steps man... i'm in the same boat...

i found that still going out/socializing is important...but dedicate time/days to just work on some stuff..and pull those finger nails ..and just get shit done. It all depends on what you want to accomplish?...

do you want to quit your 9-5er and do this fulltime? or do you wanna keep your job and have supplemental income...to buy all that extra pron and stuff...

its always hard working during the day...then coming home and working "overtime"....so i tend to do things in small bunches...

Ditto re: the 4-Hour Work Week! :)

I work two jobs and am a single mom. I shuffle along like an old lady sometimes, but I NEVER stop moving towards my goals of passive income from the internet.

Once you have the plan to accomplish your goals break it down in manageable pieces. Set time aside that you know you will follow through with. Start as small (10-20 minutes)as you need to (you can always increase it) to be successful at meeting your goals of time dedicated to internet projects.

Include time to learn more about what you are doing. I found the more I learn, the faster I can do what needs to be done. I break things into 3's. It makes it manageable for me.

3 projects that are making money
3 projects that have the most potential
3 projects that will bring in income down the road

Learn.....Prioritize......Move......Evaluate......Rework.........Repeat

Simple and (grand)motherly advice, but.....take care of yourself. Make sure you eat right, sleep enough, participate in vices in moderation, and lower stress. You will have more energy.

The best to you, WickedDude. Hang in there, don't give up, and do not stop moving!

I was in your position when I was in a full time job 6 months back buddy and I know It is very tough and frustrating at times.

If you think you can make it big online (some thing that you love to do), just go for it quit your job and go online full time, But again it is not gonna be easy and so go ahead challenge yourself and you will be happy.

Set up realistic goals and go for it buddy.

Wow I was going to recommend that. Its one of the few books I continue to read again and again.

It sucks working for other people.

If you work in a place where most of the people are dumber than you, and even your bosses aren't people you would want to live like, get the hell out of there.

Just remember that you're either going to do it now, do it later, or not do it all. If you do it now you'll see the rewards of your work much sooner, if you do it later you'll spend a lot of time being frustrated for not achieving results, and if you don't do it all you can completely stop and start doing something that you enjoy.

If you're still having problems maybe you need to move towards something more structured, for example you "map out" your daily routine like hour 1 you spend finding link partners, hour 2 you find a method of cheap traffic, hour 3 you find advertisers/sources of revenue etc.

I do the same, I work the entire day, then I come home jump on the computer and start "my" work. When my wife gets home from work we spend our nightly family time , eating dinner, and some TV. When everyone goes to bed I am back at it from about 10 pm to 2 am. I am up at 7 am everyday, since it has become such a routine it is easy to do. I do however look forward to the day that I can work on "my stuff" full time. I call it my stuff since it really isnt work at all!

Yeah...I got the idea from 4 Hour Work Week. Its my all time favourite book along with Rich Dad Poor Dad (First one, cashflow quadrant and prophecies).

It should be compulsory reading for all who want to break out of the rat race. I love his emphasis on life style rather than forever increasing income

I take my hat off to your. I really respect how you could work 2 jobs while looking after children too! How old are they? My newborn is 3 months old and she is proving a handful. I work while my wife stays at home looking after the baby.

Works till 2am and then wake up 7am everyday. now thats motivation for ya!

the motivation part is just one thing. it's also pretty tiring. maybe, you just have to weigh in which one's most feasible and choose but if you think you still need or have to do both (your regular job and your online venture), then that very need should be a huge motivator itself, i guess.

You need to find yourself a job which allows you to work on your sites during the 9-5 hours. Try looking at IT Admin or something, controlling a small business network is piss easy, good pay and gives you the freedom to do what you want.

Its a fantastic way to start in this biz
