Who do you use to buy/sell stocks online and why? Thinking about signing up and trying to take advantage of the record lows but not sure - quite literally - where I want to start/sign-up.

Are they all pretty much the same? TD Ameritrade?

+1 for etrade - been with them for like 10 years and always experienced smooth transactions - plus got let in on a few IPO's. I've also got a TD Ameritrade account only because I inherited some stocks and it was a simple transition plus if you've got a TD Banknorth account the maintenance fees are waived.

I would check the fee schedules and compare - see if there are any incentives for joining.

I have an account at tdameritrade and they are alright except for the fees - 9.99 a trade. I also signed up at zecco.com which has free commission free trades in certain cases, but haven't funded it yet.

Been with etrade since 1998. Never had any problems with them. Each discount broker has a different fee structure so just make sure you choose the best one for your situation.

zecco - they have a great platform and even better pricing. They sold me on it with their marketing.. it was brilliant, they sent me a $0 bill to pay for my free trades....

I used scottrade so I can trade actively on my blackberry... for a long time I was stuck in Vanguard (that is where my money markets / mutual funds were), and I was having to deal with 40$ in 40$ out trades.

I've finally migrated some play money into scottrade. Not much, just enough to get some hands on learning.
