My site..we'll use an example name like Octop.us / Hottest tips .....my domain has that kind of name..now assuming when someone searches for both 'octop' and 'octop.us' in Google they both show up.. How would I go about getting someone searching for 'Octopus' to show up in google? Does it all depend on how much traffic I get? Or how many times 'Octopus' shows up on the site?

make octopus as one of your keywords...showing up on a page more would help it too...also try misspellings of octopus in a keyword...not sure how well this would work...but it might help...
When you're getting sites to link to you, make sure the link anchor includes octopus.

That is an easy way to get ranked for specific keywords. Just don't over do it, and make sure you use various combinantions of your keywords.
