Last week, a report in the Chinese state-run People's Daily newspaper alleged that the Taliban have begun training monkeys in areas along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border as part of their struggle against occupying NATO forces. According to the story, the monkeys are sometimes offered bananas and peanuts as "a series of rewards and punishments to gradually teach them how to" fire Kalashnikovs, light machine guns and trench mortars.

It's already been debunked (not surprisingly). The photo used was a trained monkey with a plastic machine gun, according to cnn iirc.

Although dogs were apparently used to blow up enemy tanks in WW2, so it's not like animals haven't been used in an offensive weapon before.

But even if you could train the monkeys not to be afraid of the sound of gunfire - and set it up so they weren't around your OWN guys when they were locked and loaded - they'd probably just empty the gun at the first opportunity and be useless after that. Sorta like Iraqi troops post-invasion (first sign of enemy contact, they'd shoot everything they had as quick as they could, and then go back to their barracks).
