Ted Kennedy is Dead.

:crap: I hate it when senators, congressmen, and presidents pass away, RIP Ted Kennedy.

From an outsider's POV he seemed like one of the good guys.. well, if not exactly good at least better than most politicians. RIP

Whats wrong with the IRA? When you invade someones country your going to get armed resistance.

Same as Hamas, ETA and others... one man's terrorist, another's freedom fighter.

Having said that for the last decade or so the IRA has been a lot more about organised crime than any supposed resistance to (what they see as) an unjust occupation. So if Ted Kennedy supported them maybe he wasn't as intelligent as he seemed after all, or just as corrupt as the rest of 'em.

The 'organised crime' you speak of was to fund their armed campaign, i.e bank robberies, cigarette smuggling, fuel dealing under the noses of the British. They have never been involved in drug dealing or anything that would effect their communities, afterall - that is where it garnishes its support.

We now have a process where armed resistance is no longer necessary in Ireland which is astounding to say the least given where we were 15-20 years ago.

As John Lennon said in his song, "If you had the luck of the Irish, you'd wish you were English instead.."

Slán!

Last time I checked, the majority of Northern Ireland was democratically electing representatives in favour of remaining part of the UK.

It's an intentional and deliberately misleading fallacy that the North is occupied, one that Ted Kennedy bought into and peddled.

Like him or not, agree with his policies or not, he was pretty much the last part of the Kennedy legacy.

This is something worth mourning.

Ireland - the island, especially under British rule, is one nation, in 1921 the Anglo-Irish treaty introduced a free state dominion under British rule, and moved their troops 90 miles up the road to the north.

The partition of our country was introduced to establish a plastic state ruled by the Unionist majority (whom were planted here by the British) in three of the occupied counties, afterall why do you think Donegal, Leitrim and Monaghan were left out? Being that they are in Ulster.

This resulted in discrimination against Irish nationalists in the north especially during the 60s & 70s, No jobs, housing, internment etc.

The last election before the British partioned my country, the majority of people on Ireland voted for total freedom from Britain, it was not honoured - which is why country is still occupied by a British state in the north of this island.

There is your fallacy a chara.

A warped sense of intent regarding the partition, it was true by definition that the north was Unionist. It doesn't make any less legitimate as an entity or diminish its right to self-determination.

Similarly what you say about the referendum, your country went to war with itself over the result. How exactly would a united country have been created in those circumstances?

But we're digressing from the main point, which is that Ted Kennedy campaigned on behalf of, and gave legitimacy to a group that orchestrated murder and destruction and as a result perhaps even prolonged and intensified the conflict.
