I sold my house recently (closing March 4th) with the plan of getting an apartment for 12 months here in NY, and then after that picking somewhere else in the US to live. I was talking with Ngo this morning and basically he convinced me that the time to get out is NOW...which after some thought I agree with. Waiting a year is another excuse not to do it.

What I plan on doing right now is selling everything I have except for the essentials (computers, clothes, guitar, misc.), and renting out homes in random locations around the US (been looking on sites like vrbo.com, homeaway, etc). The short-term goal is to spend 3-6 months in different locations in the US, and then either settle in one, or live abroad and see how that goes.

My question is: where should I go first? I'll probably be aiming for a shorter-term 3 month rent, and you can rent vacation homes for as cheap as a nice apartment would cost anyway. I'm thinking a beach somewhere, since I've always wondered whether or not I'd like that.

Any other advice from frequent travelers would be appreciated too.

Don't you have friends/family? You're just moving somewhere where you don't know anyone? Curious, not trolling.

Yes I have friends/family, and none of them are going anywhere. The fact that I'm just renting out places makes it extremely easy to go home for a few months whenever I want. One of the main goals of the experience is to kind of break away from all my social ties and have some 'self discovery' time, and also focus on business.

Meeting new people shouldn't be that hard if I really want to, plus there are IM'ers in every major city in the US I'm sure I could meet up with. I live an extroverted lifestyle now but I'm a true introvert, I'm completely fine by myself (actually prefer it that way). It just can't be healthy to be totally alone though, so I plan on making friends wherever I go.

If you like the beach and gambling, try Biloxi, MS. Dirt cheap, relatively close to New Orleans, warm, on the ocean, and tons of nearby Waffle Houses.

He's not trolling dummies, obviously. I like your plan, I'd say NYC is going to be your best bet. It's the largest city in the US and one of the largest in the world. The opportunity, eclectic mix of people, and just overall beauty is irreplaceable. I'd say second to NYC would be Miami, LA, or Boston. Boston is New England so the same applies that applies to NY. It's a smart city, very young, very motivated and driven crowd with tons of opportunity. LA and Miami are self-explanitory. Wish you luck in your quest, I agree with Ngo the time is now!

Redondo beach CA Hermosa Beach CA Manhattan Beach CA= good times, cant go wrong in any of those LA beach towns. Fun chill ppl that want to have a good time. Id also consider Las Vegas since its fuckin cheap as shit these days. You could get a nice apartment close to all the fun stuff. For 3 months you would have a good time but probably after 3 months go insane.

There's a ton of stuff for locals to do that never gets seen by tourist. There's enough stuff here to keep him busy for a couple years.

I'd go to Cali, then to Colorado. In the summer hit up the beaches in Florida, check out the Caribbean, then would head to Oregon, closer to Canadian border closer to autumn.
