Hey guys;

This is going to be point-blank obvious for a lot of you, but I'm still seeing a lot of affiliates that don't realize how important it is to have your website operating so that the affiliate ads are geotargeted. Any website is going to receive international traffic, and why waste the possible revenue that they can generate?

Most networks have offers that are applicable for international traffic. The trick is to devise some code to either redirect users coming from international traffic sources to those ads or to only display ads that are international, but the latter is not really desirable as international offers tend to pay less than the usual Canada, UK, USA, Australia campaigns.

While AdSense will automatically geotarget, the payouts are typically low. It's generally best to stick to aff marketing. Ask your affiliate manager about ways that you can generate some geotargeted ads. After all, you don't have to lose the 15% (or whatever your site gets) international traffic.

Do you have an easy ip->country conversion database for me to use to handle this?
I'm getting a bunch of traffic from japan from some sites and I agree with you. I can see it's Japan in my weblog stats (awstats) but how do I know at the live lookup?

I personally don't, but our network has tools that you can use that do it automatically. I don't know about other networks though so make sure you chat with your AM about it. I know that the guys (and gals) at Copeac are really great for that kind of stuff :)

I know that Azoogle automatically redirects traffic that it deems ineligible (e.g. not in the proper country) to random offers that do accept that country. Not sure if it's for all links, but I've seen that for many of my campaigns there.

Check out MaxMind (MaxMind - GeoLite Country | Open Source IP Address to Country Database) they have a free country level database, or you can pay for more detail (State, City) data. OpenAds supports that database, too.

OpenAds and MaxMind are a pretty good combination in my book -- particularly handy for embedding text links where you may have different deals relevant to four different countries. Instead of having some kind of clunky solution like (for example) "insurance (US readers only), insurance (Japanese readers only), insurance (Australian readers only)" it will just figure out where the reader is from and just display the right aff link reading "insurance" -- more elegant and less confusing to the reader.
