The interesting fact thread

The big bang theory was developed by a catholic priest named Georges Lemaître.

He was also the first scientist to derive Hubble's Law while it was facing intense criticism and mockery from Einstein who wouldn't accept it because it disproved his constant of a static universe, which he later called his "biggest blunder."

Georges Lemaître - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Monsignor Georges Henri Joseph Édouard Lemaître (About this sound lemaitre.ogg (help·info) 17 July 1894 – 20 June 1966) was a Belgian priest, astronomer and professor of physics at the Catholic University of Louvain. He was the first person to propose the theory of the expansion of the Universe, widely misattributed to Edwin Hubble. He was also the first to derive what is now known as the Hubble's law and made the first estimation of what is now called the Hubble constant which he published in 1927, two years before Hubble's article[1][2][3][4]. Lemaître also proposed what became known as the Big Bang theory of the origin of the Universe, which he called his 'hypothesis of the primeval atom'.[5][6] He sometimes used the title Abbé or Monseigneur.

If you guys like these types of facts then you should watch a UK show called QI (stands for Quite Interesting). I'm not sure if you get it over in the States, but it is a comedy show about these types of factoids and is probably one of the best shows on TV at the moment.

Funny fact is that the guy who presents it, Stephen Fry, was the comedy partner of the guy who plays House, Hugh Laurie. (Am I stating the bleeding obvious?)

A group of crows is referred to as a "murder of crows" (rather than a flock) because they will often murder a fellow crow once it becomes sick.

Crows also mourn their dead. They will come to gather around a dead crow in great numbers and will stay for hours, even days.

They are actually one of the smartest animals next to humans. Nova did a great show about them with a fascinating study about how they can communicate with each other and pass along "danger messages" to future generations. Video: A Murder of Crows | Watch Nature Online | PBS Video

The brain doesn't actually feel pain. It processes pain signals but the brain itself doesn't feel any pain.

Wow, did you just make up every one of these lies?

The titanic couldn't have sent an SOS because the lucitania didn't arrive for 4 hours after it sank... Nice try though.

Hippo sweat is red, but it's always red... Natural sunscreen.

BluuueJaaam (SP?) caught you on the other two, and Honey isn't fully digested, they spit that up soon after arriving back to the colony.

Wow, 100% of yours were wrong... That's gotta be a record!

Uhmnn he is actually 'almost' right with his factoid. The first recorded use of SOS as a distress signal was 10 June 1909, when the Cunard liner SS Slavonia was wrecked off the Azores. Two steamers received her signals and went to the rescue. (some say it was the White Star Liner SS Republic that collided with the SS Florida also in 09)

HOWEVER, urban legend has it, that it was the Titanic that sent it the first time. CQD was the distress signal at the time but Harold Bride the second wireless operator suggested using the new 'signal' S.O.S. to 'Jack' Philips who was the senior radio officer at the time because it might be the last time to use it. Captain Smith being in the cabin at the time agreed and they all had a good laugh.

Interesting fact about Philips: Chief Radio Officer Jack Phillips

Read Bride's account just as he came on shore with the Carpathia here (the original NY Times account from 1912 - I LOVE the internet): THRILLING STORY BY TITANIC'S SURVIVING WIRELESS MAN - Bride Tells How He and Phillips Worked and How He Finished a Stoker Who Tried to Steal Phillips's Life Belt -- Ship Sank to Tune of "Autumn" - View Article - NYTimes.com

The Luisitana is btw another ship that sunk with a great loss of life but completely unrelated and wasn't anywhere near the disaster. You must be thinking of either the California who was very close but had everyone asleep til the next morning or the Carpathia which was the first ship to arrive and rescue folks.

If you do one thing, read the first hand account from Bride in the NY Times. It's really quite riveting and you can almost feel like being there...

just watched it.

mind = blown

If you put the population of the earth, all ~7 billion of us in the same area.

Removed the space out of all of their atoms.

Combined the actual matter that was left over, the constituents of the atoms which are 'something'.

We'd all be as big as a sugar cube.

Let us take a moment to  at the efficiency of the universe and its rules.

All tooth fillings have mercury (the most toxic non radioactive metal) in them that "vents" mercury vapor for over 10k years.

A diet free of man made foods can and will cure all forms of cancer and other degenerative diseases.

Fuck off.

And why? are you so fond of your cheesy poofs? Please by all means defy what I said in every facet of your life!

for the guy who asked -
The source: My own family member who was cured by the Gearson institute. The movie "The Beautiful Truth" is how we found out and then tried it.

People who actually listen will benefit, others can enjoy their lives as much as it will allow them to. I'm all for population decreasing...

I repeat, fuck off.

The therapy has not been independently tested or subjected to randomized controlled trials, and is illegal to market in the United States as a cancer cure as it lacks proven effectiveness. The Gerson Institute points to observational studies and case reports collected by Gerson himself as anecdotal evidence of the efficacy of the treatment.[6] In his book, Gerson cites the "Results of 50 Cases"; however, the U.S. National Cancer Institute reviewed these 50 cases and was unable to find any evidence that Gerson's claims were accurate.[5] Several retrospective case series have been published in the alternative medical literature; however, these have suffered from signficant methodological flaws.[5]

The American Cancer Society reports that "[t]here is no reliable scientific evidence that Gerson therapy is effective in treating cancer, and the principles behind it are not widely accepted by the medical community. It is not approved for use in the United States." [1] In 1947, the National Cancer Institute reviewed 10 "cures" submitted by Gerson; however, all of the patients were receiving standard anticancer treatment simultaneously, making it impossible to determine what effect, if any, was due to Gerson's therapy.[7] A review of the Gerson Therapy by Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center concluded: "If proponents of such therapies wish them to be evaluated scientifically and considered valid adjuvant treatments, they must provide extensive records (more than simple survival rates) and conduct controlled, prospective studies as evidence."[5]

Most people think that Jingle Bells, one of the most iconic Christmas song, is about Father Christmas on his sleigh at Christmas, but it's not.

If you sing the song and listen to the words you will see that it is a "One Horse, Open Sleigh". Santa uses reindeer and certainly not just one of them.

ALSO

The song is actually not even a Christmas song, it was written for Thanksgiving!!

Learnt this the Hard way. Killed a crow, because the noise was disturbing me work.... And then, after an hour about a 100 or maybe crows came near the dead crow and started cawing like crazy..

Gosh I had to go out and hide the dead crow. Threw it later. Even then the crow will still cawing.. and now they always fly away when they see me even from a distance. So much for my wanting to get rid of all the crows.

PPS: Fuck the spammers.
