The State of SEO

I know search engines won't be gone in 6 months.

He does have an interesting point about Siri. It will definitely change the game.

Has SEO changed over the course of 10 years? Yes, drastically.

Will it continue to change over the next 10 years? Yes, drastically.

As Matt Cuts said, the only constant is change. Yet the change is EXACTLY why SEO is a valuable longterm career. Business will always have a need for consultants to help them optimize their online presence, no matter if it goes through Siri, Google Search, or Facebook.

Have no fear guys, Leo needs to make controversial speeches so he can get up on the podium. It doesn't make them true.

some dipshit has been trotting out the "seo is dead" line once every couple years for at least 8 or 9 years now

It doesn't really matter if we are going to do SEO for Google, Yahoo , Bing , Rambler, Yandex , Sari or whatever search engine dominates the market in 5 years as Guerilla already said.

Companies will always need SEO Consultants to help them extend their online presence, like they need those offline agencies for PR and News Papper ads and other offline branding events organised by them.

Well if Seo doesn't work and I stop making money from it, I can always do seo client work and have at least two years before anyone notices :D

How do you suppose to sift through zillions of web pages to find answers, data, deals, whatever? this is where G was the answer. And how do you suppose G will provide that answer? with an algo. Can't it be gamed? yes. Will it continue to be gamed? yes. Alternative? priceless, if you can come up with a POC (proof of concept)

lol @ SEO = GOOGLE

Death of Google =/= Death of SEO

The need for search engines will continue to exist for probably quite a long time... unless humans have advanced to the point where they can find the information they need with just their brain cells.

Siri: "Why did apple's mobile advertising platform fail" ?
Response: "Apple doesn't know shit about search and advertising"

Siri is not a threat to anything. He makes it sound like the whole world is planning to throw away all their internet devices for an iphone to do search. Wolfram Alpha has been out for a few years now, direct responses to questions yet how many of you actually use it on a daily basis? Siri is all about structured data sources, Google is unstructured.

That's true. Why do you think MC Hammer is coming up with his own search engine? Word on the street is the more OBL's you have for GoogleHammer, the higher you rank.

Internet is always changing, People are always changing. My guess would be there will be no SEO in next 20 years or so. All there will be is net net neutrality...

I was at Pubcon. That was the opening keynote of the conference. Every speaker the rest of the week ragged on him for that comment. Even Matt Cutts made fun of him in his keynote, as did Blekko's rep.

That guy is an idot. Search engines will be irrelevant in 6 months? Whatev!

I know when I need authoritative SEO information, I turn to: Leo Laporte

This is what I was thinking. Did Leo Laporte somehow become a legitimate expert on anything? I was not informed.

That said, the levels of snakeoil and bullshit at an "seo conference" must be pretty high in and of themselves.
