ThePlanet Data Center - Houston Issues

Geez. I remember when EV1/RackShack's (ThePlanet bought them) power distribution building blew up a few years ago bringing everything down. Those guys don't have good luck with fire.

My company does support for a lot of customers who host with The Planet, so yes, you could say that I'm being affected.

(Also, technically I work for The Planet, as my company was just purchased by them. Different office though.)

Yeah, Statcounter is down too for the same reason.

Yeah fuck I'm loosing all my stats yesterday I just hit 2000 unique visitors per day and was still climbing like a bastard and was fucking dying to know my stats for last night logged on and couldn't get in, so I logged in today and my campaign was completely missing, it seemed like my most recent ones have disappeared.

I hope I get them back, at least I was smart enough to also put additional tracking services on the site.

I'm down

My dedicated server is one of the affected servers in this data centre.

I back up everything daily to another server in another company's data centre, so I know I can restore everything if there was damage to my server, but they are assuring us that our servers are fine. We just have to wait for power to be restored. Hopefully that will be this afternoon or evening.

It is surprising the level of bitching and whining about all the money lost by other people who's servers are offline. While this sucks big time, the world will not end if my sites aren't up. Those people who are losing thousands of dollars per day should have invested some of those thousands into a 2nd server, synced with the first. If you are relying on having everything on one server, please learn from this outage and have a plan in place before it happens to you.

Many of my sites have database back-ends so right now I'm resisting restoring them from my nightly back-up on another server due to the data inconsistency running 2 copies of the databases. At least I have that option though - some people aren't even running off-site daily back-ups.

I'm also glad this is happening on a weekend when my traffic is naturally lower for many of my sites.

Nope, word is that the stats are totally lost during the outage. kinda sucks that it also slowed my site down since statcounter wasn't resolving. I'm pretty sure I lost some sales as I compare averages. :(

But what really blows my mind is that I've been told that another stats service called gostats is in the same datacenter as statcounter - get this: gostats had almost no downtime because they have some crzy advanced fail-over technology to prevent outages. I checked the service out and it works better than statcounter. looks great so far! woot :D
