I've been mailed by all the various registrars about these new gtld's over the last few months, and now they are here.

.diamonds, .enterprises, .tips, .voyage, .sexy, .tattoo and hundreds more.

Didn't these cost in the order of 100k to register?

I'm really struggling to see the point of them, I mean, what exactly is the point of gtld .tattoo ? Initially I thought maybe there is a big player in the tattoo industry that would use it for themselves, but then namecheap have just promoted .tattoo domains.

So they expect people to reg domains with these random extensions, what exactly is the point? from a business point of view would it make sense for a tattoo shop to reg theirname.tattoo? will this work long term? will these "registrars" really make money from them?

From where I'm sitting it's just going to confuse people massively, at least in the short term.

Perhaps there's a few of these new gtlds with real potential, but looking at list I found it hard to believe some of them.

Companies paid $100k to become the registry for the "right of the dot."

Verisign is the registry of .com for example.
They then give registrars like Godaddy, Enom, NetSol, the right to re-sell .com.
And at the bottom is folks like us, the registrants.

I see a bajillion issues with these new gTLD's.

- There are too many.
- They're too long.
- They're too specific. (I think domains should be like addresses. Rd. Ln. St. Blvd.)
- And the biggest fuck up of all - putting domainers in charge.

.Tattoo is run by a guy named Frank Schilling and his company Uniregistry. He's one of the largest domainers around. He used to be in real estate in Canada and now he just chills in the Cayman Islands. No hate from me about that.

But if you look at .tattoo - Uniregistry which is the registry website for .Tattoo, the video is his stupid face. No one knows him that isn't a domainer.

And there's this group called Donuts that applied for the most, maybe next to Google. And I met them at a conference and told them I think .pizza is a joke and they're the only ones who will make money off these new gTLD's.

I believe the convo was like,

"Come on, dot pizza? Who's gonna register that? Pizza places?" And they just give me a smug look and said, "Exactly." As if they were fucking right. They also said they took 3 years picking the gTLD's they did. Just so much bullshit. Pizza places would be insane to use .pizza.

You essentially need to subsidize the new gTLD's if you buy them. Since no one knows about them, you need to spend extra money marketing, lose visitors who type .com when they meant .tattoo, and of course there's other stupid fucking rules about what you can put on your domains. Like .sexy, you aren't allowed to have titties on the landing page.

And they took all the meat off the bone because domainers. They save premium domains, give the best domains high registration fees like $500 per year. They fucked up adoption. They're greedy fucks.

The way I see it, we need new gTLD's, but not this many, and not released like this.

There's been examples of new gTLD's in the past like .biz and .info and they enjoy modest success, but just modest success.

I think something like Namecoin (.bit) will be the future. It uses the blockchain tech of bitcoin so that there is no central registry. And the costs are reasonable and you don't have any domains set aside as premium. And no one gets to cherry pick.

Groups of people could launch .anything using bitcoin / namecoin / blockchain technology and they'd essentially face the same adoptions hurdles as these new gTLD's with the benefit of being new technology that's probably better. Like, if you type nic.tattoo on Twitter or Gmail, it won't automatically link it. That's a big fucking problem.

I see these new gTLD's merely as new marketing campaigns from domainers who think they can sell their monopoly rights to "e-land" like we're fucking sharecroppers. Rather then let people homestead that shit, like .com .net .org etc.

As far as I can see they're pointless noise.

.com is known by everyone so there will be no confusion. In terms of marketing I'm going to stick with .com or .co.uk since most people will guess that as the extension if they can only remember the 'catchy name'.

My tuppence worth.

What bullshit. The new registrars don't even work anyway. I just spent 18 Euro registering isamazingly.sexy, and they didn't give me my domain!

I thought http://matt.isamazingly.sexy/ would be quite neat, but apparently my dreams have been crushed, and I'm out 18 Euro.

You can blame domainers for hoarding all of the premium .com domains. They are trying to offset this by adding these new TLD's where you could potentially find some gold.

Look at .pizza for example, what if a big pizza company in Los Angeles purchases LosAngeles.pizza. In theory it should rank well for "Los Angeles Pizza" search terms.

Please explain the exact theory behind that reasoning.

I {think|hope} several of these gTLDS can be used well and might become an integral part of the internet landscape, {and that is why|because} I bought some.

I like the idea. I can see why many of you SEO guys don't because it will fuck with the way things are currently ranked.

But instead of having for example, monsterinktattoo.com you have monsterink.tattoo

If you don't like change, stay the same while others adapt, adjust, and succeed.

That sounds more like a marketing point rather than SEO.

These new TLDs are stupid.

The average consumer doesn't know anything exists besides .com .net and .org.

These domains are for the hipster tech dudes that wanna be cute with their "my.photography" domain.

But, its obviously gonna make money because some people think its gonna be worth something.

The thing is, this opens the game up to unlimited variables. .com and .net at least kept things limited.

my.photography isn't gonna be that unique once my.photo, my.photos, my.photographs, my.pictures, my.pics, etc etc etc etc come out.

Stick to .com and .org bros.
