a toxic flea/tick supplement was applied to my best friend*, Sunday night.

*yeah a 15 pound dog has been my best friend for close to 1.5 years

before I tell you the shit he has had to go through. I know there are a lot of dog lovers here, so let me introduce him

His name is Buddy. He is a year and a half old lhasa apso.

Watched him go from a pup......

to a Grown up G looking for female tail any chance he gets.

He's a small dog. He doesn't fight. But I tell you what.... All loyal dogs are the same, he will fight to the death for me. (probably be a quick death haha) He's gonna be loyal too, cause he still has his balls! I don't care if my mother-in-law suggests to get them removed!

He is a bright one. (I have had dumb dogs in the past, So I had something to measure him against)

He gets my shoes, gets my slippers, gets his leash. Shit, I have him dunking basketballs.

I never envisioned owning a small dog, but my wife talked me into it. I now love both sizes of dogs.

This guy is literally my shadow. He follows me everywhere.

so now you know buddy.

On to these past few days...

Sunday night... My wife applies the flea/tick supplement recommended by our vet, on to Buddy's back.

Later Sunday night. Buddy is randomly barking, yelping and rolling on the floor in pain and he has been going through this since.

Nice I work from home, I can make sure he's monitored. I have been helping him recover.

I research the product and find some bad testimonials. So I see I am not alone.

I can take everything I hear with a grain of salt, but Buddy in pain is all the proof I need.

I suppose my attorney can refer me to someone who specializes in these type of cases. As leverage, I has online skillz, resources and indians.

problem is... I am not the going after someone type. I have attorneys available for defense and not offense unless it is really necessary.

I read other places where past victims received full compensation of all vet bills with similar cases from this company. As long as they signed some release claims.

This can happen to anyone who owns a dog, guess I had the lucky lottery ticket today!

what would you do bros?

PS here's a vid from today, Buddy with his icepack. Never mind the music, I make youtube videos of buddy for the kids in the family, or fiends kids who love buddy.

just fyi, the ad generated on the vid is not mine.
not that their is nothing wrong with ads, or pimping your dog right? but ads popup in exchange for youtube audio swap.

fucking dog medication is SOOOO goddamn bad. my dog before he passed away last summer was taking medication that probably hastened his death, if anything. it's fucking garbage.

i would say if it's worth the $, consult a lawyer for sure. but it might be quite a struggle, especially if you end up suing the pharma company responsible for the drug.

Which flea/tick brand was it? Go to the vet immediately of course and speak with them. I'm not sure if this counts for getting a personal injury lawyer or not really, but it's worth investigating. I'd sue the living shit out of them, and then possibly start a class action suit with all other owners who went through this.

The vet just said to have him take benadryl.

You can bet I will look into my options.

I'm not sure if you were giving him the medication as a preventative, or if he already had them.

It's normal for them to get burned, or feel uncomfortable if they already have inflamed skin from excessive bites. If this wasn't the case, then I can't imagine it was frontline or advantage you used.

My poor little man had this same problem once and now I don't even wait for fleas to show up -- give him frontline or advantage before, during and a month or so after flea/tick season.

I hope your little guy bounces back. :D

I love my dogs more than my kid most days, but I'm going to go the other way.. There is no way the vet could know that your dog would have a specific allergic (type) reaction to the med that works fine on most dogs.. We had one dog that could not tolerate the oil based flea/tick meds like you used.. The only difference was that when we noticed it on Jaba we went straight for the dawn dishwashing soap to break down the oil and get it off of him ASAP.. You can't just use water with that stuff, that just pushes it around..

Good luck with buddy..

"There you are" he said as he closed the door behind him, "I thought I'd find you up here." She swallowed hard and sweat began to bead on her forehead. "You know" he said with a creepy smile as he inched towards her, "I've been friends with your father since you were three... I've watched you blossom into a fine young woman." As he drew closer, Rebecca could see that behind that almost sedated look on his face, there was a wild look in his eyes... like he just wanted to take something beautiful and smash it to pieces, or take a fine piece of art and burn it to ash.
He stepped behind her, wrapping his arms around her shoulders. "I've watched you develop these" he said as he quickly and firmly squeezed her breasts. Rebecca let out a gasp. He moved his hand down her dress and gently cupped her buttocks. "You think I can't see what you really are you fucking whore?" he whispered softly into her ear. That's when the door swung open, throwing Arnold back up into a less threatening position. Rebecca's mom was there, holding a plate of food. "Who wants cupcakes?" she said with an eager smile. "ME!" Arnold cried as he violently shoved Rebecca out of the way and scrambled for the plate.

That's because it's an antihistamine for allergies.

Why? No one has done anything wrong.

The symptoms appear to be in line with a chemical burn.

Looks inflamed? Red? Sore? Broken skin? Bumps? Rash? Hair fallen out? Sounds like an allergic reaction.

Dude, with just about every medication on the planet a certain portion of the population will have adverse reactions to it while the other millions who take it are fine. Take for example the Asthma/allergy medication Singulair which I tried and had adverse reactions to. The side effects listed are many, up to and including DEATH! (seriously) Same holds true for pet meds.

Sounds like your dog is allergic to this product. As much as this sucks, these reactions are probably listed as possible contraindications in the instructions, which you should have read. You don't need to change vets or sue anyone you just got unlucky.

Give him some Benadryl, monitor his health, and then get some Frontline.

Yeah, Frontline works pretty good, but it too can cause adverse reactions. And as I discovered cats are able to turn their heads far enough to lick it off the application area which isn't great, causes them to salivate like mad which is pretty alarming/gross but they get over it pretty quickly.

A better approach might be to file a report with some regulatory agency that oversees that stuff. For some reason I was thinking pets are considered property so what you might win in court is not worth the effort and expsense.

Hartz is a mass producer of low quality products, basically only relying on their brand thats been around since the 1800's (or it seems).

I have had my dog on Frontline previously, still got fleas with it at the dog park. Changed the little guy to Comfortis (Comfortis® (spinosad) Flea Protection Chewable Tablet — Comfortis4Dogs.com), and that has been rock solid. Its a small pill rather than liquid you squeeze onto their should blades. Basically when you give your dog a bath it doesn't wash off, either. It's more expensive but well worth it.

I wouldn't put any of that shit on my dogs.

Had flea's once just gave them all flea baths and bombed the house

Similar thing with the dog I had a few years ago... he already had a reasonable amount of flea bites so it was past the point of preventative measures. We were given something similar to put on him and the vet mentioned he might be uncomfortable for a short period... which he was.

If your little guy didn't already have bites / inflamed skin then it's likely your dog was allergic to the product like Fatbat said. The product isn't out there being widely used to just hurt everyone's dogs. Just like some of us are allergic to things such as penicillin.

The HartzVictims link you're sharing is primarily a bunch of idiots complaining about how a product for dogs only, is burning their cats. Yes there's a couple similar complaints to yours but odds are skin was pre-inflamed and/or allergic reactions as well. There's also an equivalent amount of people claiming they had no issues with it.

What could have been done differently?

Taken Frontline or a similar type of preventative so it didn't get to this stage.

Washed the stuff off the dog immediately at first signs of discomfort (not saying you didn't) but just bringing it up cause of the stupid lady bitching on the Hartz comments who left it on her dog for days.

In my opinion, nothing worth making a fuss over happened here. Yeah it's hard to watch loved ones go through pain and your reaction is natural. All the best to Buddy's recovery.
