Check this out, it's from the AfterVote FAQ:
____

Isn't this entire system going to be in trouble when blackhat seos come around?

The way aftervote was built, its impervious to manipulation. Because of the social aspect, if people aren't finding the results they want, those negative results will have a negative score, and will disappear. We also have several systems in place to monitor for bots and exploits which might try and influence any rank. Additionally, As a user becomes a trusted searcher, his click weight will grow in weight in parallel.
____

Ummm...I think that naive. Anything that comes out gets gamed, cracked, hacked, etc. eventually. There's always a potential exploit. Especially since they just revealed that "trusted serachers" have more influence.

what does blackhat seo have to do with "people not finding the results they want?"

when i search for "buy viagra," just because some seo is getting an edu forum post to rank, how is this not what i am looking for? when i click through, i either see a link to a pharmacy or i get js redirected. and i can fucking buy viagra! (not that i need it lol)

it is irritating as hell when people insinuate that blackhats are somehow devaluing the serps. as an aspiring blackhat, i am constantly striving to rank a page that is exactly what the user is searching for, for a given keyphrase. otherwise, the searcher is just going to click that back button. whether i am using ppc or an aff offer for that page, i sure as shit want to deliver the service / ad that can fill the user's need.

i think less relevant results normally come in the form of a wikipedia page ranking WAY the fuck above where it should. not a blackhat delivering an extremely targeted result for a longtail keyword search.

how you get those rankings is a completely separate issue. :D /end rant

sorry for the tangent. yes, it is very naive to think that any site is impervious to being gamed, but aftervote is a cool concept for sure. i believe the developer is a member here, maybe he can chime in on this issue?

Oh yeah, don't get me wrong I LIKE it, but I thought it was funny they put that in the FAQ, especially since I know it's not true or accurate.

if there's good money in it, it'll be gamed sooner or later

To think otherwise would be naive. If it's a piece of shit ( never been there ) then it's a waste of time probably and not worth gaming. What they're trying to do is get blackhat's to say "oh yeah, can't be gamed?" while they're small so they can find the flaws in their system. I'd say don't fall for it and if they ever get to 50+ million users then it might be something to look at.

I totally agree with this too. Who's to say who should have the rights to rank for something and who shouldn't? As long as what you're ranking for (regardless of whatever BH technique used), is relevant to the searcher then no one should give a shit.

And....of course a lot of so-called "legit" WH sites aren't wearing as white hats as Google seem to think.

It's an interesting idea.. but I think a domain with Vote that isn't political sucks, and won't appeal to people.

I think it's a great site, lots of cool features. Do I use it? No. Why? I think it's the colors, I always set my search page as my homepage. The colors, those yellow/orange shades on white, are not pleasing to look at.

That's what would get me to change my homepage. It's a lot faster now and quickly sorting by different factors is attractive. I could care less about the voting :)

Good job and good luck with it.
