So, we've got a web site for a fairly unique product idea that went viral within 30 days. Anticipating media coverage, we had setup a landing page for product information and e-mail capturing for a pre-order sign-up.

Thirty days later, PR5 (brand new domain). Brand was featured on CNN, Forbes, Mashable, CNet, PCWorld, Huffington Post, etc... (trickle effect). We're considering conducting a small bit of research on the web site inbound link structure just to see what we can deduce. Obviously, the product wasn't designed around cardboard and paperclips, but I still think it's worth noting that the web site shot to PR5 in nearly under 30 days. Not to mention, Google Trends had some crazy tracking for our main KW (0 to +20) and specific longer tails.

I'm a newb currently running my military ass through some college, and I know there are more fundamental ways to conduct accurate, objective market research. Looking for advice so we can get to some meaningful conclusions. Obviously, hesitant to out the niche regardless that it's an actual business but looking for advice. Guerilla, I know you're discouraged from helping, but give me two cents. Anyone else, do the same.

Ok, you already have traffic coming to the site? Here's what you need to be doing:

You should be using something like Kissmetrics to be looking at your users and what they are doing on your site.

If you're not going to do that, you should at least be looking through your analytics to see what insights you can gain from that. How people are getting to your site according to analytics (referrals, keywords, etc)

You should look into putting a survey on your site, and make one of the questions open-ended and the question should be along the lines of "How did you find us?" or "How did you hear about us?"

If you give options to that question, it will not be granular enough. Other questions should be regarding things you are trying to find out with your market research. You did not give enough information about the product so I can't really help you on that part.

That should get you started.

OP - dont fully understand your question.

Are you interested in doing some market research here, if so you are going to need to start by outing your site, niche, and numbers for starters.

or

are you interested in "dissecting" the site and seeing how it shot to a PR5?

TBH, with a link from all those domains, I'd be worried if it wasn't a PR5...there isn't much dissecting to do.
