To All You TSA Haters: Flying Car To Be Released In USA Soon

A survey by Progressive Insurance, stated that 52% of accidents occur within 5 miles of home. The chances of you getting in an accident, going to and from your runway, is pretty damn high.

Lol, true, but that's ALL accidents (Progressive doesn't just do auto insurance), not just auto/aviation accidents.

If you owned your own boat and kept it in your garage, you'd have the same probability of it being crashed into taking it to the marina, and you'd be driving longer with more variables for that so it'd be a greater probability, than you would having that crazy-looking flying car.

Let me guess, for the parachute?

The ballistic parachute is cool and a sweet piece of technology. But the Cirrus is a great looking airplane, fast, and the interior looks similar to a top end Lexus. Most Cessna's and other small airplanes look the on old station wagon, inside and outside.

Other than the novelty factor of owning one of the first flying cars ala Popular Science, it's just not practical. If you're ballin' like that then just take a helicopter to and from where you need to be and keep or hire a real car at each end.

#1 The barrier of entry is way too high for most of the population at $230,000.

#2 The vehicle could barley do highway speeds on land so you're probably not taking it on there. It's not a daily driver... so kind of what the fuck is the point of owning it?

#3 I would assume, just like with any other aircraft, you'd have to file a flight plan any time you want to take to the air. That or risk getting picked up on radar and blown out of the sky by a couple of F-16's. So although you may be able to evade the cops at least temporarily you may run in to worse issues once air born.

Although, will say it would probably be the perfect vehicle for the zombie apocalypse.

This will work.

Unless someone invents a VTOL aircraft that is faster, safer (in the right hands), cheaper and doesn't require a closed piece of highway to takeoff from.

Oh boy, I can't wait 10 years for the "Kia" model of this thing to be released, so everyone can own a flying car! Have a bunch of idiots on welfare with an IQ of 40 ripping through the air at 115mph. That should be fun.

I guess look at the bright side. It'll make high-speed chases more interesting.

It might look like a top end Lexus when brand new, but 2 years after the fact - I'd be pissed if I owned a Cirrus. Just so you know, there's quiet a few companies that build great, single engine airplanes, outside of Piper and Cessna ;). Cirrus has a junk product, a dumb parachute that creates a false sense of safety (I'd be willing to bet the parachute has caused more accidents than without it), and now a company that's going to have a hard time standing behind their product. I think initially it was a great idea, but Cirrus flourished when everyone and their brother could finance a $500,000 airplane - now that's not the case.

you guys have no faith capitalism + technology. in 10 years these things will be half the price and 10x safer, probably flying automatically with superior tracking detection (why not) and gps controlled navigation.

Think about it. private pilot landing strips will quickly sprout up near rural upper class communities and eventually you will be able to land at an airport like you pay for parking.

cant wait.

you need to point out your talking about the sf50

all other cirrus ( sr models ) look like reg planes inside.

the sf50 runs about 1.4m bro

Well this is a bit of an anti-climax. There has been designs (working designs) like this going around for years, since the 60's. Sure, this might be the first car with wings to be commercialised and mass produced, but its certainly not the worlds first flying car.

The problem with flying cars, is most people miss the point entirely. This isnt 5th Element style flying cars, or bladerunner. You can't just leave your house and take off from the street in this thing, you'd still need to fly to an airfield, log a flight plan, get cleared for take-off etc...... which begs the question, whats the fucking point.

I'm betting it drives like absolute shit as a car, and because of the extra weight of the wings when not flying, fuel economy as a car will be crap. So in the end, you get a shitty car mixed with an 'ok' plane. I can see its uses if you lived in the outback of Australia or some remote place in the US where it would be advantageous to be able to drive a little while before flying... but apart from that, i think this is another fail.

It's not going to be a flying "car" until it is something accepted by the masses. Until that point, it will be considered a "small plane"
