^Somewhat off topic, but do you think that them charging these low prices for SEO services, Advertising Campaigns, etc will artificially drive the market down? I'm thinking it would be pretty stupid if it did, but then again most people are pretty stupid to begin with...

It's not a matter of low prices. He's talking about customer expectations for any SEO, that is worth their salt, in their wake once that customer starts seeking another provider. In addition to that, you have sub-contractors popping up adding to the noise that you must filter through to find the gems.

All of this is innevitable, of course. He's just lamenting over the effort that gets compounded on to everyones workload when someone new dons their rose-colored glasses of "easy money online" that the GURUs hand them from their mass-produced stash.

Good point. I have seen so many threads on other forums stating, "Got my first SEO client. Now what do I do?". There are so many people offering SEO to their local area who have no idea about SEO.

I totally blame forums like WaFo and the "so-called gurus" out there like Ryan Deiss for doing webinars and selling ebooks to supposedly "teach anyone" how to ball online! I swear you look at Ryan Deiss' fanpage and it's all baby boomers that know fuck all about the internet that are now self proclaimed "internet marketers". Lord help us.

Same goes with John Chow... this fucker has all the grandmas of the world following his blog. I can't believe his followers are getting so excited about his FREE WORDPRESS INSTALLATION giveaway that is apparently sponsored by HostGator?! Fuck, don't those fuckers know that inside HostGator's cPanel there is a 1-click WP Installation button? Meanwhile the fucker is racking them up HostGator commissions, and those grandmars are gonna turn into "Internet Marketing Specialists".

Seriously though, I wonder... Is IM like one of the best kept secrets there is? Or is it that most people lack the combo of business sense and computer savvy to actually pull it off?

All I know is that I before I found out about IM, I was jumping from industry to industry trying to get a successful business started. Now I don't even entertain those ideas.

Sounds about right. In fact, 1% might be a generous figure. A few years back I remember an aff mgr at a major aff network (could've been CJ, Linkshare, etc.) mention (I think in their mailer/newsletter) that 98% of their affiliates made less than $200 an year. Definitely not an 80/20 situation. Makes sense since most aff networks are free to join. No job interviews, etc :p
 
I feel like I'm competing with a few hundred people.

I'm coming up with this number simply by going after some of the toughest niches. However, there are so many ways to make money, that I'm sure other people have just chosen easier niches, or provide other services and do really well too.

That's a good way to gauge it... cos it varies from niche to niche.

I know cos I am one of them, once I got my money machine pumping, I throw away all else that does not matter. :)
