Toyota floormats cause death of family

What scares me is how lots of the newer high end cars are completely controlled electronically, drive by wire, brake by wire, etc. I rarely see a car more than 15 years old that still has electric windows that still work properly. I hate to see how cars like this do in 15 years.

I am waiting for cars to start getting hacked into.

what's funny is, why would you further distract yourself by calling 911 when going 125 down the freeway? to shoot ideas on why an accelerator could get stuck? There could have been literally a million reasons why, and this one would probably have been fixed by kicking the mat from under the pedal.

With a mustang, the button must be depressed to get the car into neutral, but that still there's no excuse for why that guy didn't just drop it into park or pull the mat back after he noticed something was fucked up at 60-70 mph... sounds a little weird to me

what button are you referring to?

maybe it was his wife calling, probably the only thing she could think to do at that point.

man this is straight up fucked up.

These cars have systems to prevent the engine from busting by flooring it on neutral. Sad news but honestly... this wouldn't happen to 99% of guys.. stuck pedal or not, human error is a huge factor here.

You know when 6 cylinder cars did not have 250 to 300 real horsepower this never happened.

It would be impossible to get to 120mph with a 1985 Chevy Cavalier.

Not saying horsepower is bad but it is amazing what the average idiot can go to a dealer and buy. Passenger cars with 250 horsepower. Sports cars with 350 horsepower....Station wagons or SUVs with 250 horsepower.

Let's not have big brother step in and start limiting my ability to buy 500hp sedans that get 11mpg please.

I have never had a chevy cavalier, but my old 140hp 4 cylinder car easily did 120 mph. I hit the electronic limiter which was just under 130mph a few times with about 1000 rpms left on the tach before redline.

This thread brings up an interesting point. Almost every machine in production or manufacturing and that has moving parts or motors has a big STOP button on it. I believe it is required by law(at least in the US).
I never really thought about it before but vehicles should probably have the same thing. There are a lot of deaths as a result of a car/truck/tractor running out of control.

I owned a business a fews years back where I had Van drivers. One of my drivers got hit from behind and caused him to go knees first to the floor(knee on the accelerator) and he ran that fucking van into a house (god I was pissed) but thankful some kid didn't get run over. Anyway, a shut off button would have been nice.

Yeah, isn't a mat made out of either fabric or rubber? One would think if it got stuck you would just reach down and yank. It's not concrete, so it should flex and move fairly easily. Sucks for this guy and his family, but should have been easily avoided.
