I am contemplating placing an advertisement in a magazine within my niche. The problem is that I don't know of a great way to monitor the performance of the ad.

Is the only way to do this is track conversions by using a unique coupon code and offering a discount of some sort? I would like to actually see how many visitors, as well as what the conversion rate is, etc. I think there is some useful data that goes beyond just how many conversions I get.

Any suggestions?

I've been around long enough to know not to visit your links. And yes, I did a search on this topic and came up with nothing. Just looking for suggestions from others who have been down this road. :)

He was answering your question, use a unique (short) url specific to the ad.

Or you could use a unique domain name that captures traffic from that magazine (or campaign) then forwards them to your main site.

There are a lot of options, it all depends on what/how much you want to track.

ad -> main-site/ad-specific-landing-page

ad -> main-site/campaign-specific-landing-page

ad -> ad-specific-domain -> main-site/ad-specific-landing-page

ad -> magazine-specific-domain -> main-site/magazine-specific-landing-page

ad -> magazine-specific-domain/ad-specific-url -> main-site/ad-specific-landing-page

ad -> campaign-specific-domain/magazine-specific-url -> main-site/campain-magazine-specific-landing-page

etc., etc.

Oh, whoops. Sorry about that!

I just didn't know if it would be unproductive to make my URL longer (creating a seperate page for the magazine ad) or having a separate domain name. I'll have to look at some other ads and see how others are doing it as well. Thanks for the response! :)

dude, have you ever seen those commercials for free credit reports or whatever

it goes like this...go to our website

freecredit.info/20210

why do you think they do that? did you ever think to yourself, why the fuck didn't they just give out the domain? why give out a sub directory?

thanks for playing...

Actually, I haven't ever seen a URL like that on TV. Maybe I just haven't been paying enough attention. I HATE commercials. In fact, almost anything I was is on a DVR anyway so I skip most of that junk. However, I'll probably give it a shot doing it like that just so I can track it.
