If you don't want to get radiated by the nekkid body scanners, stripped of your belt and shoes and otherwise treated like you're being booked on felony charges, all you have to do is pay $100 to bypass the security checks.

Under an interesting new program called TSA Precheck, officially marketed under the woefully unclever TSA Pre™ moniker, the much maligned TSA will allow flyers to pay a one time fee of $100 for the right to completely bypass the invasive body scanning machines at Detroit Metro Airport. Additionally, members will not be required to remove their belts, shoes etc – and can even board with those oh-so-dangerous liquids in their luggage. From what we can tell, $100 and a walk through a regular metal detector are all that will be required.

All of this brings up several interesting questions. How dangerous are belts and shoes and liquids if the TSA is happy to let some flyers bypass security with those items for $100? How useful are the invasive (and potentially harmful) body scanners if the TSA is willing to let flyers avoid them for money?

So we already knew the security measures were a joke, and this basically confirms it. But since this is an obvious money grab, how can people that can't afford to pay or refuse to pay the $100 take the security seriously anymore? Doesn't this kinda defeat the whole purpose for anyone to go through anything more than a metal detector now?

I can imagine how the "peasants" will look on in disgust as other people just get waved on through and they're forced to deal with all the bullshit. Yeah - this sounds like a great idea.

Money-grabbing mother fuckers! When will this work its way to the border crossings, so I don't have to have the seats ripped out of my car if a moody agent doesn't like my mannerisms.

This is just an excuse to bring things back to pre-2001 comfort levels while getting a few billion out of an already over-stressed economy. Poor Americans might not be able to afford the fee, but does the TSA think that terrorists can't -- or perhaps anyone who fits the terrorist stereotype isn't eligible to bypass the screening?

I can't wait until "TSA for websites" comes. $0.10 to visit a website. For your own safety, of course.

Isn't this such a typical mafia move though? Gotti would be proud.

Govt: "Protection money, please".
Citizen: "But I don't want protection".
Govt: "Fuck you, pay me".

Nice racket... very profitable, I'm sure.
