I have been wanting to "explore" the dating/adult/seduction niche for some time now. I have always assumed the barriers for entry would be rather high due to the competition and couldn't really find a "first step" to get me going.

But, I have been doing a lot of "research" on Tumblr and the Adult Niche / Porn lately and am thinking this may be something I can get into and see if the adult niche is for me. (Moral issues, profitability, etc)

I also read through the following posts as a guide of sorts and just for extra information, if anyone else wants to see what I am talking about.

But, with recent news of Yahoo buying Tumblr, does anyone think that Yahoo will try to crack down on the Porn that gets shared on Tumblr?

I read articles like this...

Tumblr takeover: Porn can stay insists Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer | Metro News

http://www.digitalspy.ca/tech/news/a483207/tumblr-porn-can-stay-says-yahoo-ceo-marissa-mayer.html

...but are they just going to flip-flop on this policy when they start to screw everything up, like they did with Flickr?

Does anyone think it would be a good idea to chill with this idea for a month or two to see if there are any policy changes that will make this model or should I just dive in now and hope for the best?

My gut feeling says, "Just do it already" but I am wondering if anyone else has some opinions on this...

Thanks

You're asking people to predict the future...

I can only assume that Yahoo was aware of the vast amount of Porn on Tumblr way before they thought about buying the site. And Marissa is pretty smart, so she can also come to the conclusion that if they remove the porn, a majority of the reason why they bought the site, pageviews, will go away.

Now, are there any legal copyright issues that can now be lodged at Yahoo? Possibly. So we'll see what happens. If they do setup to remove the Porn, it'll only open up the market for a competitor to take over. Interdasting...

When I first starting messing around with making money online, my first venture was an adult related directory.

Back then it was stupidly easy to get traffic and $$$ with adult sites. However, based on my experiences running that site and it's child sites, I'll never touch the adult niche again.

There are some inherent problems with doing business in the adult niche, not even considering the legal issues you have to keep up on (did you know you're required by law to link to model releases for every image/video you publish? see - Child Protection and Obscenity Enforcement Act - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia).

1. You will likely never be able to work with anyone around lest you be thought a pervert by family, friends, strangers at starbucks, etc.

2. You'll never get to talk about your business except for to other adult marketers. Regardless of what most people might tell you, the adult industry has a really, really nasty reputation and if you're involved with it at all, in any capacity, you get to experience the joy of carrying that reputation with you.

3. This may just be my personal opinion, but there are a shit-ton more scammers in the adult affiliate world. Shaving affiliates is extremely common because you can't use any mainstream sponsors/companies. Fly-by-night operations outnumber the legitimate guys - or, at least they used to.

4. Competition is absolutely absurd. Not to mention that your audience has been trained, for yeeeears, to get their content for free.

Personally, if I were going to invest, time, energy, and effort into something, I'd put it into a niche you wouldn't mind telling your mother about. Note that I'm only referring to the adult industry here, online dating niche is a completely different thing.

This is something that has been in the back of my mind for some time now and I think it is one of the subconscious reasons why I haven't moved forward with this yet.

If it's on your mind, I believe that's a giant red flag to abandon this idea because you will spend more time worrying about people finding out that you are involved with this industry than you will working.

I haven't run adult for years, so I don't know how much has changed. But when I did, what Michael_ said basically sums up my experience.

1. You will likely never be able to work with anyone around lest you be thought a pervert by family, friends, strangers at starbucks, etc.

This used to piss me off endlessly, not being able to go out and work at a coffee shop or having the make sure that any one who was around me knew and didnt care what I was working on.

Same as above.

"What do you do?" "erm, stuff on the internet".

But to be fair, most people dont actually give a shit when they ask that question anyway, and care even less when you say anything about the internet.

"Internet you say? Well look at the time, I have to go"

But then again, try and explain to your girlfriend why you spend all day looking at porn.

While this is true (but also true of a lot of other industries) if you know your numbers (conversion rate, etc) you can come out ahead.

Back in the day, I was running an adult dating offer from some no-name adult site. The conversion rate was at least 4x the norm, I still ran traffic with them, but I knew it wasnt going to last.

It didn't and they eventually folded taking some of my cash with them. Buuut that is the risk and the reward, for months I was getting 4x conversions, and when they folded the cash they took with them was far less then the money I received.

My rule was, if the conversion rate is far above the norm and they actually pay, run traffic till it dies. But ALWAYS understand they will die and take some earnings with them.

Marissa is a smart person. I think she knows that a good portion of the traffic on Tumblr is related to porn.

There's not much money in it tbh. Most porn can be found for free, most cam sites you can get into free (they may pay for private shows) , adult dating is or miss... etc. If they come to your tumblr for a free perv it's highly unlikely that they will want to spend any money in the first place.

Dating is still somewhat profitable, in case you are interested.

Yea, I am actually just getting started on some seduction/PUA style stuff (my own spin on it) so I may try and work some dating into the mix and see for myself...
