Twitter is somewhat of a utility, not to the same extent as Google but just like you need a search engine to search, to tweet you need a twitter to twitter or at least that's the platform integrated around the web.
If you parallel this with Facebook you can download free platforms that pretty much do the same. A point will come when people get board of Facebook and go to the next bullshit social site.
Its harder to do this when you require the platform.
Of course the valuations are still retarded.
I'll break it down another level for you, honestly I wasn't going for the lowest common denominator so sorry you're confused.
Whether you like the electricity company or not you need electricity to make the lights work and so you continue to use them. Whether you like search engines or not you need them to perform a search and so you continue to use them.
To compare this with Facebook -
You don't need Facebook to tell all your fat female friends you and your faggot mates just had a circle jerk. You can use a number of communication methods to do this including using free and readily available open source social media platforms.
For electricity you need the electricity company.
For search you need Google.
This is called a utility service.
For social circle jerks you don't need Facebook.
This weakens Facebooks value considerably as everyone can just leave tomorrow.
While Twitter certainly doesn't hold the utility value Google or the power company hold it does have an element of this and so from an investment point of view you can assume their won't be a sudden mass exodus to another service provider.
This increases the value of the proposition.
