I don't get this Putin worship. He's an authoritarian who is on the record as admiring Stalin and bemoaning the demise of the Soviet Union.
I'd rather live in our messy bumbling system than under an authoritarian regime like that. You'd think after the events of the 1st half of the 20thC people would not fall for the "strong man" stuff but they still seem to be drawn to authoritarians like moths to a flame.
As for the EU thing - all the EU has done is offer to open accession talks. Doesn't mean that Ukraine has to join the EU. Turkey is also in the accession process but it's very unlikely they'll join the EU.
Accession talks are really about harmonizing trade rules, allowing the accession country access to the market without tariffs, and it allows the EU to send them some money. (That's the only way the EU can send funds, the treaties don't allow them to do it any other way - the member states can send money to whomever they want, but the EU itself can only send money within the union and to countries in accession talks).
As to why on earth the EU would want to send money - just to stabalize countries on the EU's borders. It's bad having poor desperate countries on the borders. Poland for example has loads of desperate Ukrainian migrants in their country and the Poles were the leading advocates of starting accession talks with Ukraine because they badly want that country stabalized.
