University of Florida eliminates computer science due to budget cuts

When the people are well eduated and have satisfactory paying jobs they don't need any health care.

Have you guys ever hired a CS student fresh out of a 4 year uni course? They can tell you what year the Pascal language was invented in, but that's about it.

It really depends on the student. Computer Science degree paths aren't there to teach actual programming that you would see in the real world. They're there to teach theory which is an important building block to understanding how to program in the real world. They turn out computer scientist and not vocational programmers. The problem is business and even students don't understand colleges are preparing students to go into research and not the real world. This is why I say a good vocational school that teaches programing will serve you better than a college degree. Unfortunately we're lacking good vocational schools and businesses don't understand a college degree isn't what's required to do that job.

Has anyone hired a Liberal Arts student?.....exactly.

bahahahahaha stupid americans.

The logic is sound though. Why offer computer science education when all those jobs will be outsourced overseas for pennies on the dollar?

I go to UF and they had some protests for a week over the whole issue. Wasn't too many people, though.

If the tri-lams come up with a good rap routine they might still be able to reverse it.

Because a bachelors degree doesn't mean shit anymore. It used to, back in our parent's day.. a degree basically meant a job because you were more educated than the majority of the population.

Nowdays, it's like you have to have one just to be considered.

...so it does mean shit?

this is too bad, they dont know todays tech is all based on CS and tey are dumping it, istead of promoting it? y you so dumb?

This was true in the 90's when only 2 or 3 languages and technologies were used. In the last 10 years we have witnessed a paradigm shift:
"good programmers should be measured by what they can learn, not what they already know"

The only reason to attend well a good CS course is to really master algorithms, the only things of CS that will stand here for decades.

Learning Is More Important Than Knowing

Almost all engineers of companies like facebook, google, etc are college degree holders. Looks like these companies are doing it wrong. I think they too should hire some retards from free lancer sites instead.

It really sucks because some of the biggest brands are represented by college dropouts (Dell, Facebook, Microsoft, Apple spring to mind) and this is one less place for the future tech superstars to potentially drop out of.

Well you faggots are always bitching about free market. If there is a demand then someone else will gladly take advantage of this situation. Whats the big deal?

Only bitch about free market when it's to my advantage.

What comes first? The bowl games or the money to finance shitty degree programs.

This is a sample of the kinds of things you learn in CS:
http://www.ets.org/Media/Tests/MFT/pdf/mft_samp_questions_compsci.pdf

They made me take a test like that, but a bit longer; there were also questions about DB theory and software engineering. Didn't seem bad at all, and I LOLed at a few that were 'gotcha' questions (like #11 in the sample above).

For a lot of schools, CS courses are either the most-dropped courses, or high on the list. I'm at an engineering school, and even here there are about 12 of us graduating with a 'pure' CS concentration. The 1st year courses are getting in about 200-250, but it is because most of the noobs coming in don't realize what CS is all about. They think it's about becoming a 'vocational-style' programmer, or game development.

Those who make it to the 3rd year without switching majors, the language becomes less important, because if you last that long, you will be able to look at any kind of code and know what it is supposed to do. But there are other CS concentrations that are more toward IT and SysAdmins; they only have a working knowledge of 1 or 2 specific languages.

The only people I have ever met who are coming back for a 2nd Bachelor's are those who have BFAs they can't do anything with.

I don't know where people learn to become superstar ninja programmers, but it ain't CS. The degree is good in the way it keeps their mind active & expanding, and since they're willing to put themselves through 4 years of uni, also helps prove their dedicated and hard working.

I don't know what they spend 4 years learning though, but it isn't anything that's applicable to the job market, or real world applications.

Seriously does anyone there want computer science to begin with? Still think it's very short-sighted and stupid of them. They just made themselves the joke school of the year.
