Updating my televisions - opinions please

Depends on lighting... what you watch... how you watch...

Most likely LCD would be the best choice. AVSForum.com would be your best bet on making an educated decision.

what's the lighting going to be like in the room you're going into? are you doing an all out home theatre set-up or just casaul watching? will you move the tv around often (like once a year?)

as the above poster said, lighting comes into play when choosing. if you have a lot of natural sunlight, you can knock plasma right out of your options.

If you will be watching a lot of sports or playing a lot of games, I'd go with plasma. The refresh rate on LCD is so much lower than on plasma that sports/games can get blurred when the action is moving fast.

This is assuming you are looking at the same price level of TV's. A shit plasma < a good LCD.

I have a Pioneer Elite plasma and absolutely love it.

So basically it's the same problem we used to have with projection systems

Well with plasmas the problem is that when outside light is shun on it, it reflects like a mirror. (Kind of exaggerated but you get the idea)

This. That's why it's important you list your uses/environment for a better answer. =)

Visio 55" LCD

I shopped around for quite awhile and compared it to Sony and Samsung. Picture is bright and clear. Had it for a few months now and I love it.

Visio started out as an inexpensive alternative to the name brand flat screens and they have really come a long way in quality. Go to Costco or Sams club and just look at them side by side. They really stood out from the others

I would check out the new 3d systems panasonic and samsung i think. They are Led tvs. Little new technology but great reviews.

I have a Phillips 38" LCD TV and love it to death for its picture quality, sound quality and sleek good looks. It's about 2 years old, and a winner.

If I were shopping for a new TV now, I'd search for a model that Internet-enabled.

Visio 55" LCD

I actually recommended this purchase for my aunt some time ago and she's very happy with it.

Technology too new & prices are surely too high

But wouldn't it be enough to have a Blu-Ray player or DVR that's internet-enabled?

1) Pick an alternate location in the new home where you would like a nice TV but really don't want to spend the money right now.

2) Buy the 2nd the nicest TV suggested in this thread. Place it in the intended primary location.

3) Wait 6 months. Take a look at prices. Let your ass heal over the holidays.

4) Wait until Superbowl week and buy the nicest TV suggested in this thread at roughly 40% less than its current price.

5) Place TV purchased in step 2 at location identified in step 1. Place TV purchased in step 4 in primary location.

Just remember, plasma sucks a shit ton of power while in standby ("off") mode just to keep gasses heated, expect to see your power bill skyrocket with plasma.

Hearing good things about LED tvs, though the prices haven't come down too much yet.

If you are in an expensive electricity place like I am (SF), apparently Plasma tvs can cost you hundreds in electricity a year. LCDs too but I think a bit less.

I've had good luck with Samsung LCDs, got a 40" tv and a 27" monitor on my desktop, both are nice and were not expensive.
