Steriods - You know I never even though about BET, but that's a decent place to start. I doubt any of these places have a self serve platform though do they? I hate dealing with people. Also - the BET site left the drupal favicon on the pages - lolz.

how do you approach them? I literally get a 1/20 response rate. And I've been split testing approaches like a mothafucker for a long time now. I usually try to just get them to respond first of all with a short "Hey, I'd like to advertise on your site... call me at xxx-xxx-xxxx"

Know of anything that works better?

I'm with Garett, without eagle wings its hard to get anything to fly. I've contacted 10+ places now and have heard zero back.

Tell them your budget and that you can prepay. $5000 for a 30-day test or 14-day test, or $10,000 if its a bigger site. Some sites won't take you seriously unless you are willing to do $10k. I'm pretty much talking about sites within the top 1000, that are using adnetworks to monetize. If they are using adsense, then ask for a 7-day test for a flat rate.
Have a company so it doesn't look like you're a one man show. I put my position as "Senior Media Buyer"
Ask for the CPM right away so they know you're business. When they hit you back with their premium bullshit CPMs, tell them you're direct response and interested in their remnant inventory. That usually brings the CPM down to a dollar or less.

Xmillion hits a month and out of that Xmillion per month, half of them are unique.
