US Govt. Shutdown. Does anyone care?

I'd say they came about because of our early tribal mentality. They evolved because those at the top became wiser in terms of human farming. Slaves are inefficient workers. Then they gave us a little more freedom under feudalism where you owned a plot of land in exchange for your labor. Still though, they found that if you give an individual more perceived freedom in the right to choose trade, education, etc.. they become more productive, and thus generate more monies from which they can tax. That's where we are now..

Except now, with the advent of technology & the internet, more of us lowly wage slaves are connecting more than ever which is a threat to the establishment. The national branding campaigns put forth through media and education, with our flags, anthems, phrases, as a way to make governments seem a necessity, won't hold out too long. At least, I hope.

Quite astute observation, but by that you are in fact implying that there are massive differences between people. If you take the lowest IQ half of the population, do you think they would be able to run an efficient society? Think of someone you know of very average intelligence and then imagine he was the smartest guy around. We have seen this all the time when 'workers' revolutions fail to be able to lead a country (in every socialist state).

There have historically been a couple of ways by the intellectual elite to try to deal with the masses. One is the primitive by force, another is the libertarian by trying to shield yourself from them, a third is the idea of an organic nation state, giving everyone a role to play in something bigger than themselves.

You may think that nationstates, religion, culture and such are a relic of the past and I agree, but for a lot of people, it is what keeps them from bringing out the symbolic pitchfork and burning us all on the bonfire - only to see society fail and yet again crave a strong leader to help them with that which they cannot.

The libertarian freedom gives the masses fear and socialist play on this.

Stupid government games only hurt the people. I wish the people would give them more than they bargained for on this one. How about riots? People riot about other stuff. The people should riot in DC, I bet they'd get their asses back to work real fast.

Do they know how utterly stupid we look on the world stage right now? Stay classy America.

I think it looks great. Shows that someone are willing to stand up to the typical public employee extortion. Lets see if people really miss out on that much.

I think it would look great if the ones making this move were the ones going on unpaid leave. It's easy to gamble with other people's paychecks.

Those peoples paychecks come from taxpayer money. It's not a free for all. How many of the public employees could just as well get a private sector job? How many of them create their own work aka. stupid rules and regulations?

Fuck the world stage. We look how we look and we shouldn't feel bad about it because Europe or whomever is looking down its nose at us. There are multiple things that make us look like shit to the world. Some of which I'm proud of. (Gun laws come to mind immediately.)

Yeah, except the US keeps going around spreading freedom and democracy around the world, and telling other countries how to conduct themselves...

Ahh see but I thought the ones in charges of making stupid rules and regulations are the ones still getting their paychecks.... Conveniently those guys still get paid thanks to stupid rules and regulations that their predecessors put into place.

If democracy means a majority vote and if the the majority of leaders voted in through a majority vote in turn vote for something and it passes then the losing side doesn't get to throw the little guy on the bus because they don't agree.

If the stock market falls and the economy suffers because of these little games then that affects people working in the private sector. If they don't have a majority it's because they didn't win enough elections, they need to step up their game and get more like minded politicians into office instead of this. This shouldn't even be an option. There should be a contingency where hey, you don't want to talk this through? Special elections.

Eh, you wont find me defending our foreign policy. That is something we should feel bad about. But the shut down - not so much.

i read something about NASA cutting people off today which is off media. not sure if its true, heres google translation of nonenglish resource but i think you may understand the sense.

With 18,000 employees in the work NASA is only 600 people, and the rest was rozgoniona home. This comes just a day when everyone was expecting photos of the comet ISON moving through space around the planet Mars.

The NASA has, however, only 600 people are needed to sustain the organization, including the protection of the International Space Station. This probably means that we will not see these pictures quickly, and the water to the mill of conspiracy theorists. They argue that awaits us some catastrophic event, which for some time preparing for the U.S. secret services.

I'm a fan of gun laws myself, I'll just get that out of the way.

But just like no man is an island, as a country we are part of the world and our actions have repercussions. Remember back when we were the "most powerful country in the world"? Was nice huh? We used to have that kind of rep and the economy to back it up but then we got too big for our britches, started trying to run other countries, alienated our allies, ran our economy into the ground.

We do need world support. What if we were actually attacked? What if other countries stop lending us money?

It's my patriotism that makes me say this, I grew up feeling like America was the best country on earth but now.. I wince as I watch this. WTF America WTF

I remember when the government shutdown happened when Clinton was in office. The library shutdown so we couldn't return the books we checked out, we had to keep them an additional week.

I don't really get the point of this?

Seems like they are just doing it for fun.
