I was on food stamps as a child. This pisses me off. What is even the fucking point? More taxes straight into the pockets of big corporations, or is this fair game from the corporations' standpoint?

hilarious.

When I was living in FL still and hurting really bad in a bit of a down slope, I applied for food stamps. I got denied because I made too much the year before (89k).

so funny yet you got these low life schmucks with 5 kids with all a different father getting like $800/mo with no problem.

Also when I used to work at a grocery store during high school, I would check out people using EBT food cards and then carry out their groceries to their car and they would be driving a brand new lexus or a very nice car.

the system is definitely broken.

Fast food is often cheaper than eating healthy. Makes sense that more of the poor would gravitate towards fast food. Less work too.

But shit, who's gonna pay to deal with the health problems when these food stamp users turn 40?

No its not. Its like $6 for a meal at mcdonalds. You can spend a few bucks on bread and like $10 on lunch meat. Buy a couple heads of broccoli for $1.5 each and you are good to go for a whole week.

People just don't understand basic nutrition.

I agree. If they were really starving, they would maximize every dollar they had and make it last -- no easy to make microwavable food, pop, alcohol, etc... let alone McDonalds!

Look at the TV shows where debt specialists come in and try to fix people who are over-extended: Eating out is always on the top of their list of non-essential expenses and the first to be cut out of the budget.

It's fair game but bullshit. If they really want to get these people off food stamps and try to better themselves they should send out MREs and watch how fast they find work to eat take out.

You're absolutely correct in your point, although you should know that every McDonalds (even those in wealthy neighborhoods) still have a $ menu. This menu's most caloric option IIRC is a double cheeseburger, so a poor person can spend $2 and get just under 850 calories (as reported by McD's). This is a pretty good deal, as they can eat for $5/day conveniently.

However, you're right in that there is:

600+ calories in between a dime and 2 dime's worth of rice.
840+ in a loaf of bread, which can cost between one and 2 dollars.
etc.

Food isn't that expensive. People can live in the US with between 1-3 dollars a day spent on food.

But eating healthily and with variety brings that total to a minimum of around $7.50/day.

No position or point here - just facts.

EDIT: The pseudo- price discrimination employed by McDonalds and other fast food restaurants is pretty hilarious.

You can use food stamps to buy whatever you want in NY bodegas, they just mark it up 50-100%. Cigarettes, phone cards, condoms

You won't starve with them, but you'll wish you were dead after a week :)

Yeah I think if you want to ask for free food from the government, it should be the absolute cheapest healthy option possible and that's it... if people had to eat the same thing every day they'd very quickly have an incentive to get off of food stamps.

If they want that many fat calories they could buy a can of crisco and spread it on their bread and eat it. Most poor people don't know much about calories.

I guess all the kids of these people on food stamps should eat rice and loafed bread every day of their life.

I see your point in a sense, but I don't think they regulate how often they can use them at these restaurants, I could be wrong tho. I could see proportioning a small amount to, like $20, but that's about it.

Food stamps should be used as a method to help a family get back on their feet. But I can tell you from a child's perspective, it does make you feel alienated when you realize your family isn't like the other kids'.. so in that sense, I could see it sort of justified in small amounts.

that seems to be how it works now. we don't pay taxes to pay off the debt, we pay taxes to keep shitty corporations from going bankrupt. like a dog eating his own tail.

I agree that fast food is cheap, but you can eat cheaper than those kinds of restaurants still. If you are struggling so bad that you need government assistance, I don't think you should be spending your time in restaurants of any kind. Stock up on rice and macaroni to save money. It sucks, but your other choice is find a way to support yourself.

Wow. That is ridiculous.

I wonder what percentage of these programs actually go to people who are down on their luck and trying to make a better life for themselves as opposed to those milking the system dry without a care.
