With SSI program, a legacy of unintended side effects - The Boston Globe

pisses me off so much.

tl;dr: Welfare people with kids who are starting to lose welfare get their kids diagnosed with vague syndromes like ADHD or "developmental lag", and often flip out at the doctor/nurse if they don't diagnose it, just to get an extra $700/mo in SSI from the government. Over 50% of all SSI payments to children are psychological, and it's over $5billion per year. Free medicaid to them too.

1. Stick your kid on drugs they don't need
1a. Flip the FUCK out on doctor if they don't diagnose correctly.
2. Apply and cry at social security office
3. ???
4. Profit!

Holy fuck this pisses me off

Calm down, have a cookie bro (I know she's your type...)

There is an official "disease" book I once read about. The report I read mentioned it in the context that interest groups fight extremely hard to get their "problem" listed in this book. Why? Because once it is listed as an official "disease," most of the battle to get federal funding is over. The funding will come.

It then becomes a waiting game.

ADHD was added before the report had come out. The focus of the report was on obesity. Specifically, how interest groups were fighting hard to get it listed as an official "disease." Once listed, the federal coffers open. There were also ramifications for health insurance companies once a "disease" was listed.

Here's the kicker: once a problem is listed as an "official" disease, it is never removed.

I wish I could remember where I read that darn report, or the name of the book. It is an official one used by the state.

ADHD in the classroom back in the 'ole days:

Diagnosis: That kid's poorly behaved
Treatment: "Sit down or you're going to the principal's office. And don't make me call your parents."
Results of Treatment: Highly successful. Low rate of recurrence.

ADHD today:

Diagnosis: The poor child is suffering from a clinical disease. He should receive the care and attention he deserves to have a fair chance in life. That poor thing. Try these.
Treatment: Medications.
Results of Treatment: Calm child. Success.

lol @ parents these days.

America:

Drugs are bad, and D.A.R.E. (gov't program) tells kids drugs are bad.

SSI tells parents to give their kids speed, and they'll get free money.

$700 per kid AND I don't have to spend money anymore for condoms? Time to BANK

I think you are talking about DSM , which is due to be updated soon . Haven't heard about any proposals to add obesity to the 5th edition however .

u gotta be making under 1k a month or something to qualify so unless you are broke or live in the streets GL getting that approval

ADD is obviously a bullshit "disease" but how else are you gonna get your hands on adderall?

Screw it. My new plan for 2011.

I, my kids, and the dog all have ADD. The wife will be bipolar (like it's a strech *(you get it if you are married)).

I'll also fake my death so we get SS, my wife won't be able to work because of the bipolar, get ssi for the kids, and rake in like 6k a month to sit on our asses and play xbox on the bigscreen.

While we are at it we will apply for taf benefits and get a 5k credit card to start a business. It will be a guide on how to not work and live off of everyone else.

Flaws? Sure doesn't sound like it.... really what is the incentive for anyone who doesn't make a lot of money to work anymore?
