I hired somebody to complete a job for me. It involved a site built with php, css, mysql and so on. It started off great and really looked like it was going to be completed on time. The site was supposed to be done two months ago.. It's really close to complete, but the guy just isn't finishing the job. What can I do to get him to finish this job?

If you didn't protect yourself contractually then my friend you are as they say, SOL. If you did then sue.

Worst comes to worst use Elance.com to hire someone in India to complete the job and use Elance and thier escrow services from this point forward.

Yeah, I feel your pain dude, we go through one of these things at least once a month with new designers or coders we hire. I tell ya, we can write a book with all of the excuses for delays we get. It's so fucking hard and frustrating to find quality designers/programmers these days who actually keep their word when it comes to completing the project.

do you pay them through escrow?

help problems

Thanks for the input guys. I'm going to give him a deadline.

I was originally hoping to do a bunch of work with this guy since he is local, but it doesn't look like it's going to work. I have guaranteed work for him..

It just amazes me, cause I have other work for somebody who is willing to work hard and complete projects.

I started two new projects with a couple other guys. Hopefully they are better at completing projects.

It sucks spending so much time looking for help..

Did you give him a deadline before? If not... No wonder if never got done.

That sucks :(

I have two clients that may think I've abandoned them but I have completed work ... I can't get hold of them :( I don't know whats going on... but it makes me FEEL like I've dragged out a project ... even if I haven't ...

It's only for two clients that this major thing seems to have happened...

generally, and 99% of the time (sometimes stuff is unavoidable) I've been on time... Whatever, I always TRY and keep in communication with the client to keep people informed.

Oh well ...

Nah, we never do escrow. Usually designers tell us "pay us after we do all the work" which is great and all, even though I always offer some cash up front to show I'm real and serious, but then it never materializes and we end up chasing after them to get some updates on the work, and sure enough, the lead goes cold and we just move on to someone else. From the nearly 100 designers and programmers we've ever used, I'd say less than 10 have actually come through with the work. I hate looking for new talent, especially when I know 9/10 of them will flake out.

I once designed a Wordpress layout for Chris over at websitepublisher.net. The specs looked easy, I thought I would have it done in 2-3 hours, boy was I in for a suprise! Took me nearly a week to get it done; after that I decided I would never build someone a web site again. :D

There are three big problems when it comes to hiring talent -- 1) they take on something beyond their skill level 2) they are doing jobs for other people at the time, may be even taking on more and 3) they have a day job or school.

Someone recommend odesk.com, jobs go by the hour and you can view an entire video of the time the worker bills you.

update

designer just called me and said that the site will be complete on Saturday. We are meeting at 12pm.. Looks like some stuff was completed this morning.. Maybe he is a member of wickedfire.com..

Oh, and he gave me 4 excuses:
Thanksgiving
Finals
Christmas
New Years
and death of a friend

I thought about Jon's post after the excuses..

I do hope this work relationship does work out since the guy is local.. That makes a huge difference.

Never had a provider back out of an Elance escrow since we started using them, when paid campaigns and other issues create a concrete deadline escrow is always the best way to go. If the deadline doesn't matter then I would have to say you could take the "pay upon completion route". But again if you need the leverage of the private message boards, the Elance reputation, and escrow to ensure a deadline is met then it's the only way to go.

I've tried those foreign routes. What a nightmare. Do not EVER use rentacoder.com I thought the arbitration person in place would save me... NOPE! SCREWED. I havn't tried elance. I keep it in the states these days. We got enough money going overseas.

Yeah we usually use someone in the states for bigger projects as communication has proven a big stumbling block in the past and to us it's worth the extra money.......for small stuff we still farm it out to whoever.
