Well that didn't take long...

Pretty sure the Chinese government doesnt really care about this, besides it was "only 35 deaths"

But so soon after all the pomp and circumstance? That's just too much of a coincidence and is a real black eye to foriegn investors...

Remember, they are building this train to go from Singapore to London, and all of Eurasia inbetween... Now after a few days (not weeks!) of use, it's already falling off the tracks and injuring multiple hundreds of people?

Chinese ambition set back for sure... Don't know if I should be sad for all the deaths or happy for the extra time America has to breath...

Chinese ambition set back for sure...

It was a train crash, it won't halt anything.

I am actually travelling by high speed train today (Tianjin to Beijing), that crash just means it will be even safer from now on.

I am now reconsidering my plans of hiring an aircraft engineer off odesk...

There will be more crashes before all the bugs are worked out. Good luck con.mic

Hoping your wrong...thx for the luck:)

Holy. Fuck.

How do you know it doesn't also mean that it was too unsafe to begin with?

Well i have been travelling on the tianjin-bejing for about 6 months now, nearly every week. It always leaves on time, never had any problems. I mean there are hundreds of trains leaving daily on this one route. As with anything, there will be accidents, I guess in the end it is a numbers game. Honestly, living in China ur much more likely to be in a car accident, the roads here are fucking dangerous. So hearing about a crash does not bother me too much.

41 killed in bus fire in central China - CTV News

Japanese expert says hard to imagine China's train accident in Japan - The Mainichi Daily News

A JR official said Japanese shinkansen systems have been equipped with automatic train control since they were inaugurated in 1964 because of the understanding that it is difficult for the driver to rely on visual confirmation in applying the brake on a high-speed service.

The ATC automatically stops a train when it is detected to be running ahead. If the system fails or power is lost, the brake is designed to be applied automatically.

Japanese shinkansen trains are designed on the concept that they should be stopped whenever an anomaly is detected, the JR official said. Since their launch, no collisions have been caused, according to the official.

If there were trial lawyers in China this would not have happened, or it surely would not happen again. There is no one in China to advocate for the people. The only hope is that the Gov't ensures a fix out of embarrassment.

The Chinese are great. They always fire the top guy (they just did in this case too) whenever something happens. Why not determine the problem and then see who is to blame and then fire those responsible. Firing the top guy is not always the best choice and it discourages individual accountability and responsibility within the organization. As long as the Chinese act this way then the most talented CEO's will get out of the country and opt for positions that are safer and provide more security. This is bad for their overall worldwide competitiveness.

China has tens of thousands of trains running at any given time of the day. 1 accident every 2 years, that's nothing if you do the math.

However this is a very sad incident and the cause of this accident HAS to be put on the spotlight, so that they can improve and make their system even safer in the future.

I am a big believer in bullet trains and this won't change anything. It's much more dangerous to cross the street than to ride a bullet train.
