The phrase "social media" is very loosely used in the AM industry....What does it mean specifically if an offer says it allows social media traffic?

Does it mean that posting links to pages that redirect to the affiliate link on message boards is OK? Posting a link on a message board pointing to a squeeze page which takes the user to an affiliate page is OK? I'm quite frankly confused and would appreciate any info on this.

thanks in advance yo

Facebook and MySpace are both social networks that offer self serve pay-per-click platforms for advertising. This type of traffic would be accepted as social media on an affiliate marketing offer. I'm not sure why you were expecting an advertising agency to announce they accept spam.

check with your AM because terminology of what acceptable social media traffic is and isn't may vary by network or advertiser. It can make the difference between your getting paid, or potentially banned that you know what you're doing. The virtual incentive stuff isn't what most networks, in my experience want, when they say social media. But the only way to know is ask on the offer.

99.9% of social networks don't allow any message posting of offer links. 99.9% of affiliate networks - all of them that are legit and looking to stay in business - require publishers abide by the TnCs of third parties, like social networks.

Typically its either a media buy for display or PPC on a social network that networks mean when they say social media.

Twitter is definitely the most liberal in their ToS within the more substantial social sites.
Craigslist is making an effort lately to try to identify and remove affiliate links being posted on their site. Not an affiliate friendly climate.

There are some alternative social sites, that have less volume but perform well for targetted ads.

Yeah.. just check with your AM. I know Ruck said he bought stickies on message boards a while back

Okay well, basically the message board I'm using doesn't have any stickies. And what i'm doing is posting a link to my own landing page which then redirects to an advertiser's landing page for an email submit campaign. It's actually converting and I think the leads are legitimate. However, my posts could be considered spam and are probably agains the ToS of the site I'm posting them on.

But, the site has no captcha for anything...what's stopping me from massing accounts + mass spamming = mass $$ ?

basically what i'm asking is: Yes, i think my method of promotion is shady and/or unethical. However, technically it does fall under the category of social media and it does result in people actually submitting their email addresses. So would you say theres anything wrong with it? or do I just have to keep trying and find out.

again, I feel this post deserves some titties, enjoy:

Just sounds like spamming. If you bulk mail a bunch of people who didn't opt in and you get a few "legitimate" leads, it's still spam and ban-worthy.

well its clearly written on my landing page that by entering their email they are opting in to receive email from my website and our affiliates. but basically im also forwarding them to a page where their email is prepop'd in another advertisers email submit campaign. The message boards are hosted by Yahoo! do you think I can get sued or yahoo can take legal action against me for this? And just for you blueRAP heres more:

Social Media is Facebook and MySpace.. pretty self explanatory. There are other (shittier) social media networks like Friendster, Bebo, and international knockoffs, and of course Blackplanet.com.

craigslist hates affiliates more than anyone. if you are bored read their terms and conditions.
