Google's last named update was humming bird and it happened in 2013. and in 2014 it was stated that google made a major update in panda to refresh the algorithm.. if you are interested more with this,, you can refer mozdotcom/google-algorithm-change
Actually the most recent was the "payday loan" update, which hit several niches, but I noticed it hit especially "SEO industry" niches - "SEO Company", etc. (Even though it's call the payday loan update, it targets all SERPs). It started rolling out June 13, and went on for 2 days.

Hey man, Googles latest update was pigeon it was released on july 24 2014. The new algorithm ties deeper into their web search capabilities, including the hundreds of ranking signals they use in web search along with search features such as Knowledge Graph, spelling correction, synonyms and more. In addition, Google said that this new algorithm improves their distance and location ranking parameters.
though latest update was Pigeon, we all are waiting for a Panda 4.0 refresh.

- dont think and be dependent upon google
- find other traffic sources
- after getting traffic find ways to satisfy the traffic not google
so when google release an update you wont get affected, its a very simple formula
content + traffic = money
dont put google in the equation or you will be completely dependent on them, if they give you traffic then thank you but still focus on your the other traffic sources you've been using
