I have a 1 year + old domain that is currently undergoing a dance as we speak. In an effort to make sure that my site is optimized to the fullest, I logged into my GWT account and G is saying that an HTML sitemap is not supported. I use the following plugin for WP ==> Sitemap Generator Plugin for Wordpress · Dagon Design
I checked the sitemap link and everything check out ok. I even researched to see if Google does indeed support HTML sitemaps, and they do. I even have both formats; an HTML and an XML sitemap.
