What Is Your Preferred Online Backup Method?

Right now all I do is backup everything to my external HD to protect from harddrive failures etc. I've never done online backups of my websites, personal files, etc but I realize that I really need to do this now that I'm travelling through sketchy countries with my laptop and external hd.

So let me ask you, what is your preferred method of backing up to "the cloud"? What storage company should I use for the space? What should I encrypt the files with before uploading? Can I use something to auto-backup and auto-upload? Etc.

Thanks brahz. :bigear:

I haven't really decided what I'm going to use yet, but I think I'd feel more comfortable using just a regular FTP backup server since I wouldn't have to download a bunch of weird software. I'd like to find something like this:

FTP Backup Services for Dedicated Servers from ServerBeach | ServerBeach

But $10/10GB a month is pricey. I'd like to get an FTP Backup account like that except at cloud prices. Anyone know of something similar to this with better prices?

I already have software that can auto-ftp on schedule.

I use Carbonite. I caught a Twitter promotion that worked out to less than $3/mo for 18 months.

truecript + dropbox combo for most important stuff.
*Couple of fiverr gigs beefed up dropbox to 18.75 GB free space.

truecripted usb hd drive for less important stuff.
+ Evernote for bookmarks/ideas.

I keep burying USB sticks in my backyard. My dogs keep digging them up, and using them as chew toys though, so have to find a find a better solution.

Serious answer though, I have things setup so all my work is done on my network. I could throw my laptop in a bathtub of water right now, and wouldn't lose any work at all. Might lose a few notes, but nothing that's going to set me back.

Not trying to be a thread stealing :moon:, but just want to ask while the topic is brought up...

Been working on a backup by email service. For example when you're traveling and want to backup docs or pics, you can just send an email and the email/attachments get neatly stored.

Would the OP or anyone find this of any value?

It will store them encrypted and you can view the emails and attachments on the site from wherever and can even share them with a special link. More details... mailKeepr.com

Just want to get anyone's opinion here since it seems everyone does somethin a little different.

Mypcbackup of course... It's free and they pay you!

I've been using CrashPlan for a few months and it's worked perfectly. Their iPhone app is also useful if you just want to pull something up quickly. Support responds in less than a couple hours and I haven't had an issues with them so far.

Good thread.

Here's a vid about backblaze ...
