What makes a good EMD MFA page layout?

I'm curious if you could share any tips on what makes a good page layout for an EMD MFA site that has hand written content? I was thinking about making a layout like CTRTheme or Blue Sense but each of these looks incredibly spammy. Maybe these are what I should be going for?

I understand, ultimately, I'm going to have to test it myself, but would love an general pointers, or better, examples.
