What technical skills do you need to succeed online?

Tell him to learn how to write complex mathematical / analytics algorithms in Octave / MATLAB, than contact me about a job. That way I don't have to learn it.

One of the biggest skills is knowing when you are going to be better off paying somebody else for their skills. I am a marketer and an affiliate manager. If I nee programing, I am really most likely going to go pay a programer. It actually took me years to convince myself that was okay but it saves me so much more time to do my real work.

This is true to an extent, but you need to "put in your time" so to speak. Meaning, you'll have much more success in the manager role once you've actually been in the trenches slaving your ass off programming, writing content, designing landers, etc. Otherwise you'll just be another tool.

I don't have any technical skills, but I am relatively successful to the degree that I am an adult with a family and I haven't been employed by another person/entity in over 8 years.

For me, it's all about thinking and planning and putting things into action. Management skills. But I don't manage people. I manage and see through ideas. I guess I have "domaining" skills to an extent, but it's not really a skill that is limited to domains/domaining.

Risk tolerance is also good. Prioritizing, you get the idea.

All of my failures have been based on Thinking but not Acting at reasonable speed. And my use of "failure" is relative because I don't think I've ever had a failed idea, just some that did less well than they would have.

Pure drive, and determination.

Lots of people want to get into internet marketing after hearing all the positives, but very few can actually follow through, and are willing to work hard to get where they wanna be.

Quite frankly, past the drive and determination, all that's truly needed is an understanding of ad copy, and an understanding of html/css. The rest you pick up as you go along.

He needs to have common sense and not the mindset of "I can't make money online because my 1 ad failed" or "I can make bank with no work put in". Just ask him what he is passionate about and help him setup a wordpress blog(go through the process of hosting/name registration/installing) and tell him to write every single day then go from there.
