Of course he was still collecting food stamps after the win as well:

I just saw a story the other day about some chick in Detroit that won 700k and continued to draw welfare benefits.

I don't see a problem with this whatsoever, period. I'd rather he uses my tax dollars to get some lion head shampoo than blow up some poor kid in Afghanistan.

Update:

Since winning the lottery in the Spring of 2010, a lot has happened to Leroy Fick & son Jeff of Auburn, Michigan. The Ficks blew thru their $2 million winnings ($850,000 after taxes), and both ended up in prison. Leroy was sentenced to 45 days in jail for illegally possessing a prescription painkiller in early January of 2012. In October 2011, Leroy’s son Jeff stole a 90-year-old man’s car. Jeff was sentenced to 180 days in jail, and an additional 185 days deferred. Upon his release, he will also serve three years of probation.

In March of 2012 Leroy Fick pleaded guilty to three counts of illegal possession of fireworks, three counts of operating a motor vehicle on a restricted licence, allowing an unlicensed person to drive, and driving 97 mph in a 55 mph zone. In addition to all these charges, there was a lot of controversy when Fick continued using his food stamps after winning the lottery. The state has now approved a bill preventing any future lottery winners from receiving public food assistance. As for the money…it’s all gone

To be honest that's fairly depressing.

State takes away 1.150.000 million dollars in taxes from them

Reporter asks: "Is it ethical that you still use our tax money for food stamps?"

LMAO

ly2, read the Millionaire Next Door. Taxes aren't actually a big deal if you manage your assets well. They most heavily affect the "new rich" that like to spend an exorbitant amount of money on goods that depreciate faster than the Zimbabwean dollar.

The smart rich live frugally and eventually, even if they are paying 50% of their taxes, that only comprises < X% of their net worth, therefore they are completely secure. That's where I want to be.

He just paid 1.15 million in taxes, he has every right to keep his Bridge Card.

Oh noes, possessing prescription painkillers, fireworks and operating a vehicle on a restricted license!

The only thing wrong in any of that is the theft.

I am shocked that his son the financial advisor helped his daddy go broke. He was putting the money in secure investments such as sneakers, swords and knives and sports jersey's and they were all tucked away in the security of the local notell motel.

Ok, so the state ran a lottery. The state paid a guy $2m. The state and federal government took half of it. And now the state is angry that he's taking $300 a month? Wow!

It's like if I were State Farm and your house burned down and you needed a claim. So, I send you a check for the value of your house, but the check is only for half of the value of your house because I needed to cover administration fees. You'd be up in arms.

No, they effect everyone. Learn some economics bro. Taxes are a net loss for society.

I like how the people pitch in their money AFTER income tax for lottery tickets, on which they will pay a sales tax, only to again be taxed by about 60% or so on the winnings. Nothing wrong with that picture at all.
