Same for us in the UK. We won it, it's ours, the state doesn't get a penny.

If I won the lotto big in the US I would transfer the cash to an account overseas and get on the next plane out of there before they get thier hands on it.:boid:

It's not like they take just a little bit of the winings, they take more than half of it. That's so fucked up!

No Kidding! Canadian $ is basically on par with the US $ right now, but a few years back it was worth much less. I remember when they did a 'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?' Canadian Edition, and the commentators joked that, even with our dollar only trading at about 0.70 cents to the US, the Canadian winners would still be winning more then their Yankee counterparts.

I am honestly shocked that Americans would even stand for this. So uptight about Taxes and Freedoms and Rights etc.

We have the American public so dumbed down now they would not argue against martial law. As long as we do not take their sports/reality television programming or their video games, we can take anything else. Their only interest in who governs them is who looks the best on their television (nice suit, nice hair, etc). It is understandable that women are so shallow, as it is their nature. But now the men have been feminized and are no better.

Don't expect the American public to ever fight back unless you see their power grid go down for any real length of time. If they lose their power, they lose their programming, then they will wake up, but not until then.

Exactly. The high majority of people that I see purchasing a boatload of scratchcards or a dozen lottery tickets usually look like they are part of the lower-working class.

When they win that sort of money, they have no sense of managing it because they never experienced anything quite as similar to it.

This is somewhat true, but I also know plenty of self-made millionaires that play the lottery.

In my opinion, for anyone that wins say more than $2 million in the lottery, it should mandatory to meet with a certified financial adviser before they collect their winnings, and that adviser should be held accountable for the second million of their winnings as far as investments go (actually less than $1 million because of taxes).

While the lottery is a tax on the stupid, if you make a reasonable salary you're an idiot if you don't put down a dollar or two each week on the off chance that you can win an amount that can set you up for life.

For instance, in Michigan you can start playing the lottery when you're 18, even if you play the big two lotteries here (mega millions and powerball) for each draw ($1 per draw, 4 draws total per week) you're only looking at $208 a year on the small chance that you win millions of dollars. Many of the people on this forum spend more than that just on getting a couple of shitty links to their domain. The lottery may be a tax on the stupid, but if over a lifetime you're only looking at paying nearly $13,000 (over 60 years) to win millions of dollars, you're an idiot if you don't play. Plus, here some of the money goes towards the public education system, and the more educated people there are (regardless of how you feel about teachers and public education), the better off the country is as a whole.

Why would the State take any of the winnings away?

In Canada, you win what you win, and it does not get taxed. That's bizarre.

Same in other countries, but let's be real, It's fucked up that the state taxes the hell out of your hard work but doesn't tax income aqquired from massive luck and no work.

Did anyone say 1984? The lottery is just another ploy to keep poor people from rioting. A hope of a better future.

However I do stand by what I said. I find it 'slightly' puzzling that an American would just accept the state taking half of their winnings, but vehemently oppose any form of taxation that might go towards improving their own life, their community, etc.
