Ok, theres this e-commerce site, Im not going into details, but the sell an assortment of things, it belongs to someone I know and I am trying to convince them that having a proper name is ESSENTIAL to success and popularity and also GREATLY affects what categories you appear in the SERPs... Now... I would like if you would tell why each of these URLs are good or bad...

Mywebsiteforgifts.com

or...

Trishes-gifts.com

Do what you can with the info I gave, I dont have tons of time to type out all of the details...

The same could be said of 'ebay' or 'walmart' or 'kroger' or 'ukrops'... None of those tell why they exists or what they sell. What do you suggest for an URL? "Imsellingtonsofdiversethingsatthiswebsitethatdoesntreallyspecializeinanything.com"?

But uh, yea... Thanks for the input... I like dashes in websites they dont affect me personally, if theres a dash in it, it affects nothing, I just type it in like any other key on my keyboard, I know dashes are a "nono" around here, but I think its a pretty stupid rule...

As I said, Thanks.

alot of people don't like domains with dashes, even people who don't know anything about the whole affiliate marketing scene. It's the truth!

Walmart and ebay can get away with it because they're household names. Good luck getting that kind of recognition for "Mywebsiteforgifts.com." Your domains aren't really brandable. That said, keywords in the URL helps but it won't make or break your site.

Fine, go with a brandable name. A word that doesn't exist. I have a few domains like that... but these aren't really brandable in that sense either. Take wickedfire for example... it doesn't say anything about what the website is but it was BRANDED well. So fine, you proved your point that way... you can get away with having absolutely no keywords in your domain while using a word that doesn't make sense. You could still find a ton of better domains fresh regged.

I would suggest either
1) thinking of a made up word that sounds a little more catchy, or
2) hitting up thesaurus.com and finding synonyms to put in your domain

It's hilarious that you want to ask about a site "someone you know" is creating - then want to mention Walmart and eBay. I'm sure if that "someone you know" can drop cash like Walmart and eBay their name could be just as recognized.

A ton of time and money went into making each company a household name. Just doesn't happen overnight. Word of mouth is the best way to make a name branded.

by the way, when you write you "don't have the time" to give us all the details... if you don't have the time to spend on something for yourself, why should we even waste our time helping you?

with the details you gave, both domains are crap, like it or not. take the time to give more details if you want a better answer. as of now... i think you'll get the same response from everyone.

you asked for advice, dude, and trigatch gave it to you.

now you come across like a total fucktard.

Uh...buy them both and 50 other's, then test. If you don't have $500 to spend on a domain name, good luck running any kind of online business.

They both might suck they both might rock, but until you drive traffic at them, they both suck, because neither one is working.

Dashes might help SEO if you use the right keywords - If your doing e-commerce though you need a name without dashes like mentioned earlier that is dashable.

My opinion? Be Brandable! Don't use dashes!
