Just got a new laptop, shipped quite a distance with really no padding..

The screen when powering up/running is just "white", nothing else.

Hooked it up to my TV via the HDMI cord and it shows windows/boots/loads fine.

But the laptop is still showing a white screen.

I removed a few things to get to the LED screen "connector" cord and un-plugged that and re-plugged it back in, but that didn't work.

Not sure what to do. Already tired removing memory, new hard drive, removing battery, etc. (Before I realized it worked on the TV, lol).

The screen is super bright/responsive. It just seems like it's missing a connection or the video isn't working. No scratches on it, literally new.

What part do I need to replace/look for?

Sounds like the screen is grade 'A' fucked. Sorry to deliver the bad news.

I think I figured it out...

Playing around on the laptop, and realizing even Internet Explorer won't load... .dll missing, other files have errors, etc. HP manual says to install BIOS, drivers, etc. 99% chance the graphics driver is missing, lol. Hopefully this works, going to restore the entire thing.

If not, well looks like it's either a new screen... Or some other part I can't remember the name of, indicator or something. Brb will update.

It would be quite lucky if you re installed windows and it worked.. I guess does it work on boot? Meaning does it show the bios screen? If not it's not good.

I would figure if you can see it via hdmi, but not the screen, the screen is fucked.

It has to be..

I went to HP.com to install the AMD graphics drivers and upon install it just failed. Said windows cannot find i.dll or something, and then it said it cannot install the graphics software.

I'm trying to just reformat the entire thing, but there's no factory restore in BIOS like HP usually has.. Hmm.

Also yeah BIOS screen works fine. Luckily.

Sounds like I'd just ship that bitch back and make it someone else's problem.

I could.. But if I can fix it, I'll be happy and the seller will be happy. Not trying to wait another 2 weeks for a laptop. Seller was friendly, I'd much rather do the right thing and see if I can fix it before sending it back as a last resort.

Saving this here..

First update your BIOS with the latest version. Here is a link to the latest version.
Next, you should remove the currently installed driver.
Click Start, type "Device Manager," and press Enter.
Expand the "Display Adapters" section.
Right click on your video card and select "Uninstall."
Once the uninstallation is complete you can download and install this driver.
Reboot the notebook and verify whether the problem persists.

Also makes sense:

This has to be it. :)

So basically, you thought you were buying a laptop, but instead received a piece of junk, and now you are concerned that sending it back will piss off the seller?

Holy fuck. You're like the best customer ever. If it was me and that required more than a half hour phone call to to support deal with it not working out of the box I would have returned that shit and had them send me another. Why waste your time on their defective product?

Err.. so you are saying it works on the external out (on the TV)?
Sorry, but if so, the screen is fucked, not the graphics driver.

You know, the graphics driver being the thing that runs ANY and ALL graphics.

::emp::

What kind of junk would you like out of my garage? I promise to overcharge but be friendly as can be via email.

I feel for the OP. I just got the wrong model "flash" (cheaper) from a amazon purchase. It's such a hassle to have to send it back. OP do the right thing and send it back. A few more days of waiting, will save you alot of agravation down the road.

This is prolly one of the most retarded fucking things I've ever read here, and we can all agree we see some seriously stupid threads...

WTF did you buy? A USED laptop? WTF did you PAY for it?

Brand new or refurbed and warranteed perfectly adequate business grade laptops go for like, what... $350-500 on NewEgg or Tiger all the time? $700 bones tops? And ship Next Day? And you're agonizing over sending this shitbox BACK?

Here, here's a nice Envy Pro for under $500, if you really want an HP craptop:
HP NAE-HP-DV6-7222NR ENVY dv6-7222nr Notebook PC - 3rd generation Intel Core i5-3210M 2.50GHz, 4GB DDR3, 500GB HDD, DVDRW, 15.6 Display, Windows 8 (Refurbished) at TigerDirect.com

WTF. Get your cash back and tell Mr. "Nice Seller" to fuck off. Chances are good that the screen didn't work when he shipped it, sucker.

HTH.

There was a reason why that seller was super nice to you. Jesus contract, you really are fucking naive.

Also a new screen for your laptop is going to cost more than the laptop.

If the laptop can display to your tv via hdmi then like emp said, your screen is fucked; it's not the driver.

I'd much rather do the right thing and see if I can fix it before sending it back as a last resort.

The right thing would be not selling you (from the seller viewpoint) a lemon, and the right thing would be not accepting (from the buyer viewpoint) a lemon and demanding the person be held accountable either through a replacement and accepting shipping costs on both ends or through a full refund.

The right thing... man whatchoo talkin bout willis?

You do realize the minute you opened it, you voided the guarantee?

Procedure for dealing with broken items you just purchased:
1- Send it back
2- Either get money back or charge back

I don't see why you are having a hard time with these steps, it isn't that complicated.

.... update.

Re-installed windows.
Re-installed all drivers, etc.

No luck.

Still works on the external.

Windows won't even recognize the screen or the webcam?
.....

Called HP last night. $250-300 max and they will fix the screen/webcam/anything else and set it back to factory. (Not bad). I might* do this.

I know people are bitching in here, telling me I'm getting screwed over, etc.

But I didn't buy this "new" from Amazon, etc. Bought it from an individual. Shit happens with shipping. Did the seller send me a broken laptop beforehand? I don't know, perhaps, but it doesn't matter at this point. I can get a refund, seller offered it the moment I told him..

Why am I prob going to keep it?

The price was $400+ less than what all the other exact models are.
HP doesn't make this model anymore, and it's a bitch to find one, rare.
Waited 2 months to snag this one at this price.
For used condition, it's flawless.
All the parts are there, granted the screen got damaged somehow.

.....

Even if I send it out to HP, $300 isn't going to set me back that much. Still works out in my favor in terms of saving $, just not as much as before.

But still weighing my options.

Is this the one that had the little dents too? I dunno man... I would send it back. That's too much to worry about fixing right from the get-go, doesn't seem like they took great care of it. Granted you can't get this exact model, but there's a ton of other ones to choose from out there.. Once you've paid a few hundred more for repairs, you're probably getting into the ballpark where you can get a nice new one and not have to worry about any of this. I would send it back... Just my 0.02 tho.

White screen generally means cracked and needs to be replaced.

And $300 to fix? Ouch. About a year ago, I was pissed off for whatever reason, and ended up with a broken laptop monitor out of it. Took it down the next day, and I can't remember, but I think about $80, couple hours, and I was off with my laptop with a brand new screen. They even polished up the entire laptop for me and everything.
