I recently had a thing where I was the person with the money and the person was the one who was doing the work. The situation started that they knew that I have money, blah blah. They pitched me on helping me with a project that I would have in time for a client presentation. It was agreed that I would pay them after I got my payment but then later agreed that I would pay them regardless if it sold or not.

Where my issue is: They did a half assed job and didn't complete everything that was needed to complete the task. The sale fell through

This morning after my meeting, they asked me how it went. I told them, then they wanted to know if I needed their Western union info.

We got into it and they were like after awhile, said 'Well after I get the money, I'll completely dedicate every waking second to getting this off the ground and help find buyers."

I told them that i felt like I wasted money and time plus I said I felt manipulated as the initial agreement was supposed to be that I would pay after the buyer paid. They responded by telling me that Shit happens and not every business deal goes through. Now, one thing I have learned from WF is to be very assertive to get your point across. I knew the buyer would buy, it just needed it to cleaned up and tidy'ed up.

The kid proceeded to tell me that I needed to prove that I was worth it, but in my brain. I feel that he should have proved himself to me because at the end of the day, I am the one risking the money and buyers.

I just feel used and I feel like I just threw my money in the toilets.

It seems you have been exploited? It happens. What did you learn? How will you conduct business in the future?

I have to pay him tomorrow. I was banking on the sale to throw up more cash so I can further a project. He tried to definitely steer me away from blaming him or pegging him. I was pretty firm. I actually felt pretty proud of myself. I am someone of my word so I'll be paying. Just kinda sucks. I hope karma bites the other half of his half assed ness

Were you drunk or high off your ass when you did this?

What the fuck were you thinking?

What the fuck were you thinking?

He still hasn't mentioned any of the important details. How much is the project worth? How much is he paying this broken English kid from Romania?

If its
Project $10k
Payment to Kid $1k

ALL DAY LONG.

So you didn't even solicit any help? Whose idea is the project?

Technically you have the upper hand, especially if you haven't paid yet. But if you said you will pay anyway, you should. If the work was subpar you should have got that fixed before pitching to your client.

They were pushing it towards me.

The project was worth 6,000 and they stood to make 2,000. I don't know, I thought I was being fair since he wasn't getting anything up front, but now I feel like a complete idiot.

I thought it would be and we were working it together then he logged off and I still had to go to the meeting. The last thing I was looking to do was strike 3 outs in one.

Maybe they should experience this first hand as it's a good business lesson. Anyone got a contract?

There is just an email stating what was agreed. He told me that he was all about money because he has been scammed before.

If he delivered what he said he was going to then you need to pay what you said you were going to. If not then pay for what you got, a half ass job is worth the amount of money.

Did you try calling him or otherwise getting in touch? What's his excuse for logging off? In this case I think you should just pay him $500 for his trouble and tell him to go fuck himself because clearly it was his fault.

What did you expect? You agreed to pre-pay the developer for a project you have not closed.

Get over this, you have no one to blame but yourself.

It was supposed to close, just needed additional tweeks. I do plan on paying him. I did try calling him and sent him multiple messages but he came on after he knew my meeting on claiming that he had power outages.

Who knows

I have agreed and I am not saying I won't be paying, was just voicing it out to see if it seemed like it was a ploy to get money.

Of course it's a ploy to get money. You know that already. From the way you have described it, he's happy to avoid you at the crucial moments of the deal but has no problem asking for the full amount. Since there was no contract you have the upper hand but that depends on whether you want to keep your word. Have you tried approaching him by saying you will offer a quarter or even 50% of the price, take it or leave it. By the sounds of it, you'll need to spend the rest just getting the thing complete for resale value. I think you're being far too lenient on someone who didn't finish the work.
