Why did you get into affiliate marketing in the first place?

I wanted to start a thread about what drives one to enter the affiliate marketing universe. It is a very unique business niche; meaning it is not taught in any classroom and many of the trade secrets are closely held to the chest.

I studied Economics and Statistics in business college. I was a programmer at a young age writing code for the early aol "tools" in the mid 90's at the age of 11 with VB C++. Thus, it seems that affiliate marketing provided a daily challenge and a lucrative career path with the freedom to work where I wanted and when I wanted. I should probably get an M.S. in computer science for my graduate studies for the hell of it.

I got started in my dorm room 3 years ago and wasn't making shit at first. I was promoting dating sites with reviews and driving traffic any way I could with minimal capital. I started reading Wicked Fire and determining what did and didn't work through months and years of trial and error. I did learn alot, however and never gave up.

Affiliate marketing is not for pussies.

I started making some money when I discovered CPA and how to promote effectively. I'm now on the verge of graduation and have no need to find a 9-5... :playboy_sml:

i came from the same background...lots of programming/web development growing up then studying economics/math as an undergrad. i started in AM because the work is fun and challenging and it allows me to surf and workout whenever i want. oh yah the money is good too.

...by happy accident really....

I was a computer programmer at a big soul-killing company, and a few of us decided to moonlight by selling some database utilities and software on a website. We started to pull in traffic for people who were interested in software, and I decided to stick some Amazon links on the bottom of the page.

After the first month, I realized the Amazon links were making money - and were a lot less trouble than supporting software. I split off from the rest of the group because I wanted to focus on the affiliate marketing thing, and they didn't want to be so "commercial", and I'm the only one working online 8 years later.

The rest are still commuting to their cubes, noble in their purity. hahahaha

I still work a lot, but I find it much easier to juggle this, plus kids, than having to stick to a firm schedule and mix in a 2 hour round trip commute. And plus there was the soul-killing thing....

Well I was looking for a summer job when I was in high school. I started doing link exchange for a penis enlargement site. Basically just sending out loads of e-mails and submitting to directories.

Then I discovered how much they make and I was like... shit, I gotta do this too. 4 years later - here I am - paying for college, rent and gas for my car from my affiliate earnings.

Because I thought I wouldn't have to work that hard to earn some decent coin. Then it turns out a good amount of the people work like dogs (apparently, its called "hustling"). Funny how I ran into what I was trying to run away from.

I realized that if I could make a dollar off every visitor on my real estate blog I could quit real estate..........Never did get that dollar per visitor , but 50 cents per visitor was nice enough.

Honest reason: So I can vacation in Asia for 3 months, do shit all, then travel back to America, and collect the checks/wire transfer/paypal payments.

(Done that, next vacation is going to be 6 months)

Not to mention gloating at people working at office jobs, and hauling their ass to work every morning while I walk around shopping, or milling about.

I see a 56 years old man in a suit, and I'm thinking, "Man, I don't give a fuck how much I get paid, I'll never aspire to be like him"

Also, I hate having a boss. I was in the army once, and fuck, it's nothing but dick sucking from superiors.

You are too effing witty to be real - lol...

I don't think people really get what it is like to go to the movies, shop or just watch TV in the middle of the day and know you are getting paid....

Seriously, does anyone else feel like they are watching folks living in the matrix and they just don't see it?

Truth is I wanted to learn something new. Know that I can make an income without depending on the 'day job'
I suppose you could call it a security blanket. Didn't occur to me though that the security blanket would be so much fun
