It's actually a smart move, in damaging relations between different EU countries. The ones who are heavily in debt and need more trade to stay afloat will need to find some other way to make money - whilst the stronger ones don't really care. Divide and conquer strategy.
As for the drugs argument just go the Indian route and get the cheap generics that are essentially the same thing as the brand names (except for the psychedelics, but I hear Russia has a lot of those anyways).
