Why does the my local government have the power to compel me to remove snow....

People in the Minneapolis city limits have to clear sidewalks in front of their houses, but it is the job of city employees where I live in the suburbs.

The city maintenance workers here just drive down the sidewalks in little tractors or skid-steer loaders with either a snowblower or rotating brush on the front depending on the amount of snow.

The fact that you are asking this retarded-assed question here...on WF...tells me that you are one of the fucking retards that just doesn't get social responsibility, and therefore are one of the muppets that ordinances like this are designed for.

Good luck crossing the street without help, fucko.

Consider the concept of legislating social morality; is this something to be given over without question?

Some people can shovel their sidewalks and their neighbor's without being compelled to.

I suppose other people, you for instance, need to be told what to do in every instance of their lives in order to function.

Your constant need to lash out at any expression of thought that opposes yours is disturbing.

Were you abused during childhood? It's not your fault bro.

I bet you're one of those government can't create jobs and government spending doesn't effect the economy people.

But you want those government workers to come shovel your snow.

I certainly am.

Nah, I'm usually up for paying some neighborhood kid.
It's a good thing you don't live in the D.C. area or anywhere near a military base for example and own a small business. Sequestration is going to prove the idea that government spending doesn't create jobs or affect the economy wrong. When facts contradict popular opinion that isn't based in fact, it tends to cause people some consternation.

Paying a neighborhood kid or doing it yourself, according to OP is still taking on responsibility yourself for the betterment of the group and shouldn't be legal.

Is this you at OPs house?

Sure, government creates jobs, for themselves and the leeches that vote for them.

lol, did you just say "betterment of the group"?

edit:
I certainly am.

I misread your quote. No, obviously government spending effects the economy. Everrything government does, negatively effects the economy.

When I lived in MD they tried to sell my house at tax sale for not paying a fine for not removing snow.

The thing was it was the first snow of the year and it was a house I was flipping and not living in, and I forgot. I called them to explain and they said ok, they'd reduce it to a warning, then a couple months later I got a letter threatening auction if I didn't pay.

Here in Seattle they don't give a shit, no fines for that shit. Same with grass, in MD they'd fine you for not mowing, here it's considered "natural" landscaping.

Where the fuck do you live OP? We have a daily 3 am city appointed plower who does all the sidewalks. He even comes back mid day to make sure they are clear. Move to a better city/neighbourhood?

wtf? sell you house at a tax sale for not paying a fine? Do you live in China or something?

Wrong on both points. What I wan't to know is what gives any government the power to compel someone to maintain public property.

Just curious, what differences (if any) do you see between a "fine" and a "tax"? If you "own" property, and you're forced to pay a fine because you refuse to be coerced into involuntary labor to maintain public property, or you're forced to pay a tax for the "right' to own that property, do you feel that either circumstance justifies taking your property away?

If one does and not the other why?

The people who view their assumed power as legitimate. Collective coercion.
