Why site loading so slow?

Hi,

So I'm trying to follow CCarter's lead and get some speed in my website. Here's a pingdom shot for one of my sites...

As you can see I have literally 2 seconds of waiting between connecting to the site and anything loading. Can someone help me out? What am I looking at here and where further should I be digging? I know it's a very open-ended vague question, but if someone could point me in the right direction, or even let me know what other information you need, it would be appreciated.

It could one thing, or it could a combination of things. Are running plugins? If so, which ones? Plugins alone can slow down site performance. Are you using shared hosting? Have you enabled gzip compression and caching through your htaccess files?

I had one plugin which was slowing one of my sites down by a full two seconds all by itself.

Hi,

I've got this on a small VPS that I had kicking around. I believe it's running Apache at the moment. You said plugins. Are you recommending randomly disabling plugins until I see what each one does? Also I'm running cloudflare on it. Should I disable cloudflare while I get this thing smoking fast then re-enable? Anyone got experience with it?

Also, for what it is worth, it seems like my connections to the server possibly are taking longer and longer. Any idea why?

Check your plugins with this:

WordPress Plugin Performance Profiler (P3) | GoDaddy Product Blog | GoDaddy Support

It's a plugin that will measure the performance of the plugins you use and their affect on page load times.

E.G. I used it to work out that the slimstat plugin I had installed was costing my around two seconds of loading time when anyone visited the site. The rest sounds fine, mind you, I'm still muddling my way through all of this sort of stuff myself.

Are you using caching?

I'm not using a caching plugin. I thought cloudflare does some of this. Ironically I've disable cloudflare and now it's much faster. I'm going to tweak it without cloudflare and test it. Once I'm happy I will try re-enabling cloudflare again.

That's pretty slow. What's your hosting? Also do you have too much plugins?

I would say that you might have a few too much on your pages but the connection to the server is the problem so that ain't it.

My hosting is a small VPS with 1 GB ram and 1 GB connection. I really don't get this. That said, disabling cloudflare made a HUGE difference. I wonder if cloudflare limits the number of connections you get? It's the free version obviously. Really unsure, but at this point I disabled cloudflare and essentially JUST by doing that, I cut my load time in half. Not a conclusive test by any means, just an observation.

I'm going to load that plugin suggested to me and give it a whirl.

I actually had this same issue. I read everywhere about how switching to cloudflare would increase my sites speed like crazy, in which it did for a while but it quickly went down hill after a while and now I don't think I'll ever go back. Don't get me wrong, I am not saying that cloudflare sucks and it's useless. But for me and my website it just didn't work out, whether it was user error or just a combination of plugins I use or whatever else. All you can do is just keep testing things one by one until your shit is flying. And once it is flying, I promise you will notice a difference in traffic! People love fast loading websites.

Currently what's making the most drastic differences for me is using

WP Super Cache
WP Optimizer(You can't afford not to use this)

And then I'm also take every single image on my site, converting it to png and then using TinyPNG to cut the size almost in half.

This has made a world difference!

Hope this helps, if you have anymore questions feel free to PM me.
I've been going through this page speed issue for a long time now and i'm finally getting the grasp of it after reading all the golden threads here.
