Nobody's offered up any interesting polls since Nicky Cakes made his comeback on the forum, so I figured it was time to shake things up again.

Other than 99 year old Clint Eastwood and his film where he teaches a young girl about life and how to deal with challenges, we have:

  • Total Recall (or "Rekall" as it's called in the film; but not the title?)
  • Judge Dredd (for fuck sakes)
  • Red Dawn
  • Carrie
  • Robocop
  • Mad Max
  • Point Break
  • The Crow
  • Annie (for those of you with kids)
And holy mother of christ, the list goes on and on.

I'm not hating on the originals, but it's upsetting that there's nothing with a half-assed original plot or idea to look forward to when I actually have an extra 90 minutes to relax with a flik.

Didnt you see Magic Mike?

Ha, I was just talking about this with Ice the other day.

To keep it short, there won't be anything new in Hollywood for a very long time (read: ever again). Movies aren't an art form anymore; now they're an investment.

I'm going to agree with shinobi on this. The last batman was so over-hyped and it was awful. If anything, well start seeing more movies from stories that have made it big in books, comics, and video games.

I'm glad you started this thread cause I was about to do it myself.

To tell you the truth, I don't go to the movies anymore. I'm not gonna pay whatever it costs these days to watch a shitty remake or sequel with some asshole talking on his cell phone or some baby crying next to me. Fuck that. I'd rather watch something original on TV at home in peace and quiet.

As for these remakes, Hollywood is pathetic now. And to think that I got a degree in Screenwriting (no shit) because one day I thought I would be able to sell a script on spec. Fat chance now. Hollywood hires hacks to rewrite originals because they don't have the balls to hire someone to write something fresh and new. Every movie now needs a built in audience so the chances of the movie tanking are reduced and the asshole producer doesn't get fired and lose his cushy corner office.

Here's what your choices were in 1999. Look at the originality, quality, and selection of films to go see:

The Matrix
Fight Club
American Beauty
Cider House Rules
The Green Mile
Blair Witch Project
The Insider
Three Kings
Magnolia
Being John Malkovich
Eyes Wide Shut
The Hurricane
Office Space

Just 12 years ago, we had a great selection of different genres and original films to see. These days, your only choice is what remake or sequel to watch. It's fucking pathetic to see Hollywood go down the drain like this but as long as dumbshit Americans (and foreigners) pay to see this crap, nothing will change. And that's fucking sad...

I haven't been to a movie theater in over 5 years now.

You guys all thought I was balling because I'm such an awesome adsense farmer, but the fact is that I'm rich because I have simply gone 5 years without paying $6.75 for a small popcorn and $5 for a watered-down coke.

Sheeple gonna sheep.

My biggest quarrel with Hollywood isn't the unoriginality, but the constant crap-feeding happening from the influential industry.

Among a few other things, I blame Hollywood for a lot of the American misconception of reality. Fuckers.

I'll make an unpopular statement here.

I like some of the remakes. It is a chance for a classic to get a facelift that it really deserved the first time. Or it gets seen by a new generation that would have otherwise missed it.

The majority of these films are horrible but i see some gems in there that i really enjoyed that I didn't even know were remakes that I would have otherwise never see.

List of film remakes A-M - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
List of film remakes N-Z - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Heat for example is a remake is and in my mind one of the best 'heist' films of all time... (certainly the best shoot out).

You really want to be pissed off... how about gaming 'franchises' ... COD and Madden come to mind.

Just watch some European/Korean/Japanese movies if you've run out of classics to watch.

Loads of great films outside Hollywood.

It sucks that our own American independent film scene has died down. In the 90s, there were some great films coming out. Where are all the Quentin Tarantinos of today? Should I assume that Hollywood is no longer looking for talent anymore and wants to rely on remakes and sequels from here on out?

I just don't understand their business model. They put out crap and then bitch about how they're not making any money. And yet if you notice, the auteur filmmakers like Tarantino, P.T. Anderson, etc all make money on their movies because they have an audience waiting to see their next picture.

Maybe Hollywood should be grooming the next generation of great filmmakers instead of seeing which 80s classics they can market to a new crowd.

Original movies come out of hollywood about as often as original shit comes out of WSO's.....

But really, watch some foreign films instead.

I think I've watched every classic American film going back to the late 60s. Maybe I have to try those 50's moviews, but I don't know where to begin.

European/Asian cinema has tons of great films though, if you just know where to look. Netflix is great for inspiration. For example I watched both a Korean and Swedish take on the vampire genre and they were both great. The Swedish movie ('Låt den rätte komma in') was remade as American (Let the right one in) but lost all what made the orginal great.

Therefore, if you're an American I think you'll be surprised at how much great cinema is out there once you go past Hollywood.

Definitely. A lot of these are on Netflix. Check out The Man From Nowhere for a good action film.

I saw the preview for Judge Dredd and thought...hmmm this actually looks decent.

Clint movie with a young girl? Didn't see. Was it beat off material.

@LukeP

2012 and still not bringing in your own snacks.

Amazing movie, a few more Korean would be. I saw the devil, memories of a murder and a million more titles I don't have on my mind.

How can you hate on them for that? They're simply putting out what has the highest chances of being a success. What you'd like to see is some impossible utopia style feat which would bankrupt studios again and again and again.

Making movies is business like any other. You invest money in production and you see your ROI. If you can't be profitable with x type of movie, you'll try another formula and stick to something that makes money, right? Who wants to be in the business of losing money after all?

If the masses were intelligent, had a thirst for knowledge and a strong need for creativity then we'd see movies that'd match that.

But since the average person is am instant gratification seeking, highly emotional, irrational idiot you see the type of movies that are hitting it big lately.
