So, did anyone actually buy this piece of software? Thoughts?

Based on what I saw with the preview, this is how I felt about Windows 8. (Thanks Hack for the gif)

Windows 7 doesn't suck so why would you change unless you bought a new rig with it installed already?

Been using a legit free copy I acquired by signing up to Microsoft InTune, I love it. Microsoft apps like Mail, Messages, Music etc are being updated every few days. It's only going to get better in terms of apps.

Things I like about it:

- Split screen, 'pinning' other apps to the side of other apps is pretty brilliant and very useful. I pin Skype to the side all the time.
- It's fast as fuck, boots in seconds.
- The flat design of the desktop windows is excellent, transparency looks very tacky and antiquated to me now.
- It syncs all my settings
- I get free music streaming through Xbox Live.
- OneNote app is awesome, all synced up with my Windows Phone too.
- When I take a photo on my Windows Phone it syncs up to Skydrive automatically, and in turn syncs up with my Windows 8 PC.
- The search ability relative to each app is great.

What I don't like:
- The music app needs some navigation work, I can't choose an artist then choose an album from that artist. I have to select the album directly from the albums list. As I said, this will be forever evolving for the better. You can of course search, which is probably easier once I get into the habit.
- I have to use different shortcuts to open the search charm depending on what I want to search for. i.e you have to use windows + w to search settings. That's a bit annoying. I'd like to search universally instead of remembering different shortcuts.

I don't care for it, but for a tablet/notebook hybrid I think it'd probably work fairly well. After about a year it should mature enough to be pretty slick.

Still, I only use Windows because I dev in Unity. The day Unity editor comes to Linux I'll never look back.

I really like Windows 8. I will switch all of my computers and my wife's computer over to it eventually.

Here are my posts about it copied from the Surface thread....

I have been using Windows 8 for about a month on my main computer. My desktop looks the same as it did in Windows 7. It has the same icons and works the same as before.

The new metro interface is basically a full screen start menu that pops up when I hit the windows key. No big deal in my opinion.

This is my desktop below...

Windows 8 startup is faster. It beats Windows 7 in most benchmark tests, but not by enough to make it very noticeable doing every day work. No hardware or driver issues for me.

File History is built in now, so old versions of files can be restored. Back in my tech support/help desk days people constantly wanted to recover old versions of their files.

Skydrive integration similar to iCloud has been added.

Drive Extender from Windows Home Server was added allowing multiple different size drives to work as one in Windows.

For people with kids... Parental controls have been improved with time limits, site/app blocking, website history, search term history, store download history, most used apps, most visited sites, etc.

File copy progress windows now automatically stack in a single window if there is more than one...

This menu pops up now when you right click where the start menu used to be...

I think the Pro/Windows 8 version of Surface will have desktop access.

You can start non-metro apps from the metro interface, but you have to go to the desktop to access them after that. When you are in the metro interface you can switch between running metro apps or go the desktop where the regular windows apps are running.

Here is a screenshot of the metro popup to view and switch between running apps... firefox and some other things are also running, but I have to access them from the desktop.

It's definitely quicker, albeit takes some time getting used to. I'm running Windows 7 on my Mac right now anyway, and the perks of switching over don't justify the hassle.

It's only €29 or $39 to upgrade from Win7 to Win8 so I bought copies for both my workstation/gaming rig and my laptop, both of which are brand new, but which came with Win7.

I love everything about the new design, the flat colors, sharp corners and large fonts are very contemporary and easy on the eyes. This is a brand new box and performance was already lighting fast under Win7, but the whole thing feels a bit snappier and gaming performance has increased slightly.

I added this... Start8 for Windows® 8 - Bringing back the Windows Start menu to bring back the traditional Start menu but to be honest it's not at all necessary and I might remove it. Everything is available through the new Start menu and the right click on the bottom left corner, it just takes a bit of getting used to.

I'm probably going to purchase a Nokia 920 now to integrate my phone with my computing environment even more closely.

Windows? Really?

So, you create better wp installs with win8 than win7?

Or should I bought for booting 0,0001 sec faster and gain 0,0001 sec?

Come on people. I have virtual boxes with win xp.

Why make m$ richer?

No linux users?

How is the stability?

So far no problems. Win7 is completely stable. This seems just as good.

Why bitch and moan about it? If you don't want to upgrade, don't upgrade. Hell, I have an old Commodore 64 if you'd like to have it.

LOL, there's still shit out there that don't have Win7 compatible drivers. How's that working out for you?

Such as? Webcams from the early 2000s? Old scanners and printers? Old Matrox video cards? How long are OS developer supposed to provide legacy support for ancient hardware? The shit that doesn't have Windows 7 drivers now, will never have Windows 7 drivers.

My current machines are both brand new, but other than additional ram and newer video cards, my last computer was an Athlon based machine bought in 2007 and it had no problem running Windows 7 so I was pretty confident that my new machines wouldn't have any issues with Win 8. In fact all my Asus and Corsair components, and my laptop, were advertised as Windows 8 ready when I bought them.

Or maybe I should have held off on upgrading since my old golfball Logitech webcam doesn't have Win7 drivers?
